My mother used to have a saying that I am sure was not original to her. She always said, "The further I go, the behinder I get." That saying popped into my mind when I realized that we are celebrating the 3rd Sunday of Lent this week. We are halfway through our 40 day retreat with Jesus in the desert. We have but three more weeks to prepare ourselves to celebrate Easter. By Fr. Michael McCormick Dear Readers,
My mother used to have a saying that I am sure was not original to her. As a priest, I have 20 or so days to get ready for Holy Week and all the special Masses beginning on Palm Sunday and continuing through the Easter Triduum--Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. This week the Chef decided to go green and give you a menu you could use for St. Patrick's Day.
We will start with the main meat course, side dishes, and then dessert of course. By Kathie Lepper Everyone here on "The Ridge" is lovin' the weather today. Even my neighbor's little dog "Molly" was so excited to find some bare spots to scratch around in.
By Canton Fitness Center Thermography: An Alternative to a Mammogram
Many people are starting to question the health risks to radiation producing mammograms. Many alternative practitioners have maintained for years that mammograms do more harm than good. According to information on the Dynamic Thermal Imaging website, the ionizing radiation from mammograms mutates cells, and the mechanical pressure can spread cells that are already malignant (as can biopsies). In 1995 the British medical journal The Lancet reported that, since mammographic screening was introduced in 1983, the incidence of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) has increased by 328%, and 200% of this increase is due to the use of mammography. By Lorelei Colton Wishes for a speedy recovery are sent to our Minnequa Grange Master Elwin Roberts, formerly of Canton, following his recent heart surgery to replace a valve.
There is a lot of sickness reported throughout the area – folks with the flu and regular colds, as well as stomach bugs and general aches and pains related to arthritis with this rotten weather we’ve been having. With the temperature finally climbing into the 30’s this past weekend, Ron was able to chip away the ice that was built up on the sidewalk. And, how can we have even one conversation without talking about the weather? Last Friday at 6:10 AM the thermometer read minus 11.5˚. My boss at the shoe store said it was minus 16 degrees at his house just outside Troy that morning! And then I read in the newspaper that someone in Alba had spotted a robin. Hope you all remembered to change your clocks Saturday night. Time is a funny thing - do we gain an hour or do we lose an hour? I guess it all depends on how you look at it. Can you buy time? I don't think so but then why is it in all the old westerns the good guys were always talking about buying some more time? You can't borrow time so why are so many folks living on it? Time flies, time drags on, Well, which is it? Does it march on or move slow? I guess time will tell. What?
By John Shaffer Hillary Rodham Clinton, we thought, was one of the most accomplished politicians in America. Our use of the past tense will be explained later. The way she obfuscates issues and manages to distract from the main issue is brilliant. In her statement and press conference she declared that she used her own email account “for convenience” and because she “wanted to use only one device instead of two.” That’s two insignificant reasons for an unprecedented enterprise. (No other government official has used his own private account “exclusively.”) If it was “more convenient” for her, why would it not be more convenient for any government official?
Ahoy! Welcome aboard Noah's Ark!
Good verbal communication is contingent upon a fluent command of the native language. Nowhere is this more crucial than when speaking about a subject in which you claim to have expertise. By Charles Rockwell I'm writing about the winter of 1938-39. In that era Route 14 was plowed and cindered but most other roads were not. Also at the time of this event, the outlying townships did not send their students to Canton until they entered Ninth grade. So our Seventh Grade in the tan brick building was not very large.
By John Shaffer The results from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech before Congress are in, and the President and most Democrats did not like it. The Republicans were thrilled with it.
By Lois Ribovich Again there isn't much news. Don't get out much with the weather.
Saturday night "the gang" got together for supper at the Midway. Attending were: Ed & Jane Moore,Dan & Betsy Clark, Steve & Lois Ribovich, Barb Perry, Bonnie Bryan, Louie and Phyllis Howell, Dot Hopkins, Norm & Carole Hicks, Marty & Cheryl Hasselman, Charlie & Elsie Carnes. A good time was had by all. Remember the Book Swap shop open Tue., Thur., and Sat. 10-12. Many new books. The birds have sure been going through the bird seed. Remember to feed the birds. By Kathie Lepper A little March Madness going on here "On the Ridge" this Monday morning. I think, maybe it's spring thaw going on today. I know that Carol Brown's snow people are getting thinner every day. She said she would probably remove their scarves and hats today.
This week the Hometown Chef decided to take it easy and not cook or bake, but give you some helpful hints concerning the food you do cook.
Will the month of March live up to its saying "In like a lion, out like a lamb?" Judging by the forecast for this first week one can only hope. Of course, I get most of my weather information from Mrs. Clark on Channel 16 who acts like she sees the weather at the exact same time as the rest of us. We can get our forecast here simply by calling our kids in Indianapolis the day before. Never wrong yet.
By Lorelei Colton As usual, the main topic of discussion remains “the weather”. Everywhere I go it’s the first thing out of our mouths. Statements like: “keeping warm?” “ready for spring yet?” “how cold was it at your place?” and so on. Last Saturday morning the thermometer read minus 16.6 degrees at 6:15, which I reported when I stopped at my first go-round of errands at Rockwell’s Mill in Canton – there to buy MORE birdseed.
