I guess by the sounds of the paper we didn't make it down, but quite a few from Hillcrest did. Congratulations to Glenda Slater for taking second place with her quilting piece, she entered at the fair. Brings back many memories of when we were younger of going to the fair sometimes two or three times when Wayne and Linda were growing up and in later years with the grandsons trying to keep up with them.
By Richard and Joyce Pratt The weather this past week has been summer weather. Okay, apparently a very nice week for Troy Fair.

We sure have had the hot weather. We might get some cool and rainy weather, shortly. On Sunday my girls had a surprise birthday party up to Mountain Lake at Maria and Terri and Edies' trailer. Laura, Regina, Kevin, Ernie and Kambra, Edie, Me,Me Aryona ad Carrissm and Maria, little Jay and Aahlesia, Tony and Lacy Karen and Parker Sonja, Kyan, Sue, Lyndon, and Jean Lundy, Lucille Donavan, Evie Boyles and Tom Jennings were all there. We had beautiful weather and a wonderful day. Fr. Michael McCormick Dear Readers,
Most of us have times when the challenges of life get to be too much. We find ourselves overwhelmed by difficulties, illnesses, financial worries, the state of the world, the news, and stress of all kinds. We live in a day of rapid change. The law is being grossly ignored. Our history is being bulldozed to clear the way for development. Some professors are twisting the guideposts in the minds and hearts of our students. Traditions are forgotten, manners ignored. The result is a kind of chaos -- social confusion and rootless individualism. We live in a society that's lost its bearings and is adrift on a sea of change .At those times we may feel much like the Biblical character, Elijah. Although we conveyed our congratulations to Tricia Hojnowski and her parents in person, having it in print one more time doesn't hurt. As Queen she will inherit the duties and responsibilities that go with the title. Does she also have all the powers that queens get? Can she lower the price of some of the food items? Can she make all of the handicap spaces be next to the entrance? Can she make a decree that at least one of the entertainers be someone that this old guy actually has heard of? (Of course, I'm kidding.)
Thank you once again you our good neighbor Kenny for cutting the grass at the abandoned Rich Way property. If not for his efforts the place would reflect badly on the whole street. This will be the second summer a few, very few, of us have taken care of the grass-cutting chores for this property. By Lorelei Colton They have officially closed the books on another successful Troy Fair event. The stats I read in the newspaper indicate that it was one of the best ever as far as daily attendance goes, with a lot of fair-goers waiting until later in the day when it wasn’t so beastly hot. Ron and I went for awhile on Wednesday, my day off, and thought that it was terribly hot, especially when we were walking around looking at various attractions. I was quite surprised, to say the least, at how expensive most everything seemed to be, so our fair treats were limited to a milk shake and an ice cream cone – plus a couple bottles of cold water, a very welcomed commodity indeed. However, we did get quite a bit of visiting done and got to look over new vehicles, ATV’s, the chainsaw carvings, the 4-H building, and the quilts and photography. And in the grange building where our exhibit was displayed we took in the vegetables, flowers, and animal mounts.
By Esther Butcher I hear we escaped another rain and thunder storm last night. Troy got hail the size of quarters it said on WNEP. Saw an alert on Firewire also.
Cindy Putnam went to Florida for a week and saw her family. It rained every day, but she had a good time. Belated Anniversary wishes to Bill and Alicia Harris, who were married three years on August 4th. It is about the season when tomatoes, squash, and zucchini are plentiful. Sometimes you might be overrun with the produce. What to do with them. You give them to your neighbors of course, but here are a few recipes you might try to use them up.
The first one uses both zucchini and tomatoes. It is a simple vegetable dish that goes great with grilled meats or poutlry. Tomato Zucchini Casserole 11/2 cups grated Cheddar cheese 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 2 cloves garlic, minced salt and pepper to taste 2 medium zucchinis, thinly sliced 5 plum tomatoes, thinly sliced 1/4 cup butter 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion 3/4 cup fine bread crumbs Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly butter a 9x9-inch pan. In large bowl, combine Cheddar, Parmesan, oregano, basil, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper, and set aside. Arrange half of the zucchini slices in the pan. Sprinkle 1/4 of the cheese and herb mixture on top. Arrange half of the tomatoes, and top with another 1/4 of the cheese mixture. Repeat layers. By John Shaffer When we were in high school, we were taught that "socialism" was an system in which government controlled "the commanding heights" of the economy. It provides for collective ownership and management of the means of production. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz did not attend the same high school we did, so perhaps she was never taught about socialism; but one would think she might have picked it up sometime on her way to becoming Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Apparently she doesn’t know – or isn’t telling – because in two different “mainstream media” platforms, she did not answer questions about the distinctions between the Democrats and the Socialists. She dodged the questions and refused to find any difference between Democrats and Socialists. One of the candidates for her party’s nomination for President, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, has been elected to the House and the Senate as a Socialist. He is running as a Democrat. It is highly probable that if the leaders of the Democrat party in Congress and the White House were somehow transported to Europe, almost all of them would join socialist parties.
By Kathie Lepper Wow! I hit the jackpot of news items this morning her on "The Ridge". There were five items in the news box when I checked earlier. Thanks folks!
