By Jim Lewis Up until recently it was very hot with possibly the most hot and humid days of the summer. It didn’t take long to work up a thirst. I can remember throwing bales of hay in metal roofed hay mows during the, “Dog Days” of summer. After a while, wanting a drink dominated my thoughts. It was an exaggeration, but I felt like I was, “dying of thirst.” At that point the standards were lower and almost anything drinkable would have been accepted. Sometimes we were able to sneak a drink of ice cold milk straight from the barn’s milk tank! That was MAXIMUM SATISFACTION. What tastes best to you when you are thirsty?
A Sage Thank-You
We year round occupants of the mountain cabins on top of Ellenton Mountain, await the arrival of the folks whose cabins are for getting away from the city and rest or for trout or deer season. We permanent folks refer to all of them as, “The Cabin People”. On The Friday of Labor Day weekend the dogs started barking and there was “One Of Them”. She invited me to a dinner party at her cabin. I put on my best and never expected such a wonderful experience. I was treated to a complete four course dinner of things I never have eaten before and could not spell if you asked me to. Complete with fine wines and entertaining chat with the other five other guests Thank you, Mrs. Bobbie. By Canton Fitness Center Lose Belly Fat in 5 Steps

Why did all the wild pheasants disappear in Pennsylvania in the last 30 to 40 years? Pennsylvania Game Commission pheasant biologist Scott Klinger believes the best answer is the changes in land use. After seeing all the housing developments where we once had farm fields and brushy waste areas, I concur. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture database, the number of farms decreased by 30 percent from 1969 to 1992 in the primary pheasant range counties in the state which are defined as the southeastern counties. According to a U.S. Geological Survey’s Breeding bird survey, wild pheasant populations in Pennsylvania decreased by 98 percent from 1973 to 2012.
By Canton Fitness Center Don’t Be Like An Old House
There once was a house. It was a nice old house, but over time it started to show its age. At first there were just a few cosmetic problems that would have taken a little time and effort to fix, but the owner put it off. He figured it wasn’t anything to worry about. Little by little the problems got bigger. The windows and doors got rickety and drafty, the siding started falling off, and the roof started to leak. The owner got a little concerned, but figured a patch here and there would hold it until he got a chance to take care of the problem. Rev. Kenneth Marple, M.A. Back to the Future
Mary Williams was my paternal great-grandmother. Mary was born in 1870 and grew up on a plantation in Maryland. Because of her longevity, her life overlapped considerably with my own. It was from grandma Mary that I first learned about plantations, slavery, and the civil war. Mary told stories about her brothers fighting in the civil war, killing snakes in the gravel pit, and visits from former slaves who had helped to raise her. As a young woman she recalled that the former slaves would walk from the farm in Maryland to her home in Philadelphia where she lived with her young minister husband. She was born on the heels of the Emancipation into a world where salves were still not all that emancipated, onto a farm where her parents had actually owned slaves. By Evangelist Eric Smith “And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ,” Ephesians 1:9. The next portion of the sentence we are pursuing is verse 9. The whole sentence is verse 3 through verse 14 of Ephesians chapter 1. If you have been following these articles, you will realize how important it is to examine every phrase closely.
By Jim Lewis Remember picking up teams on the school playground? Two captains are chosen and then each has a turn in selecting a player for his or her squad. Where were you selected? First, middle, last? How did it feel? Being selected early felt good and boosted your self-worth. Being one of the last left us feeling less than worthy and unwanted. Sometimes it feels good just to belong, to be wanted. Doesn’t it?

A young man with his pants hanging half off his rear end two gold front teeth, and a half inch thick gold chain around his neck; walked into the local welfare office to pick up his check. He marched up to the counter and said, "Hi. You know, I just hate drawing welfare. I'd really rather have a job.. I don't like taking advantage of the system, getting something for nothing." By Richard and Joyce Pratt Summer seems to have returned for a while with hot and dry most of all last week. More of the same is forecast for this week.
A pretty nice weekend for campers and those having picnics as well as sports. As I look back over many years of camping and picnicking I can't remember very many Labor Day weekends when we got all three days of sunshine and dry. If you have allergies now is not a good time to be riding around on mountain roads especially where there is field after field of goldenrod. By Terren Smith Hi all, how was your week?
Well summer has officially ended. At the lake Sunday night at 8:30 the flares were lit and it was beautiful. The reflection off the water, the peace and quiet, you just had to be there. Following that, Beverly Halstead from Canton gave an interesting and informative talk on "feed bags' which were popular beginning in the 1930's. Grain bags, flour and sugar bags and some others were printed with fabric designs rather than burlap. They could be used for many hand sown items around the house as well as clothing for the family. They were popular for many years until the five and ten stores made less course material inexpensive enough that the feed bags went out of style. However there are quite a few places where one can buy them even today. They are, of course, much more expensive than originally.
