By Jim Lewis One of my daughter’s favorite Andy Griffith Show episodes is entitled, “Barney and the Choir.” Barney, (Don Knotts) joins the choir and sings so far out of tune that it hurts your ears. The singers are all in harmony until he enters in, then what was beautiful turns sour. An out of tune piano, guitar or other instrument can give the same effect or If someone does not sing or play along with the others in a song, then it stands out like a sore thumb, even if they sing or play well. If all of the players, (Like a beginners children’s orchestra!) are out of tune and/or sync then…the term, “Only a mother could love” comes to mind!
By Kenneth Marple, M.A. Dementia and Obscene Language
The vast majority of older people do not have organic brain disorders. The prevalence of dementia in the aged has been estimated at approximately 2 to 5 percent of non-institutionalized adults, and only 20 percent among individuals over eighty. Not long ago "hardening of the arteries" was incorrectly regarded as the primary cause of dementia; presently, "Dementia of the Alzheimer type is believed to account for more cases of dementia than any other single disease" (Davison/Neale, 1986). Much disorientation among older people can be attributed to depression (older people suffer losses that include: health, income, property, power, and life-long friends), or the side effects of medications; these types of disorientation are reversible and can occur in all age groups. In the minority of older adults, where permanent dementia does occur, there is sometimes an alarming change in language and behavior. This can be confusing and upsetting for family members who knew a very different grandfather or grandmother. For example, one lady that I used to visit at a nursing home would greet me eagerly with a stream of obscenity, then proceed to follow it up with sexual advances! She had been a very devout person and a Sunday school teacher. What happened? You are not alone as you grieve the loss of a loved one. GriefShare is held Tuesdays from 6:30 – 8:00 PM at the Canton Mennonite Church and is facilitated by those who have experienced grief and offer you a listening-based approach as you learn how to deal with grief in your own manner. Each person is on a different journey in their grieving.
A new cycle will begin on Tuesday, October 27, 2015. Meetings aim to help those who are grieving find support throughout the grieving process. Whether your grief is recent or from a not so recent loss, we encourage you to come. GriefShare is a great opportunity to learn you are not going crazy after the death of a spouse, family member or friend. During meetings we watch a video which shows examples of different grieving ways, how to grieve and what to expect throughout the grieving process. Not all people grieve in the same way. It is not mandatory to share, but you have the opportunity to share with others attending if you feel you are able to talk about your experience. Read a gentleman’s experience: By Evangelist Eric Smith “In order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory,” Ephesians 1:12, the next portion of the sentence we are pursuing. The whole sentence is verse 3 through verse 14 of Ephesians chapter 1. Paul continues to show us the way God worked out His plan in these last few verses of the sentence.
Last time, we ended by looking at “the conformity with the purpose of his will.” Before creation God instituted a plan to bring mankind back into the right relationship with Him. In order to be with Jesus Christ, each individual must conform to the plan God has established. The plan is salvation to all who accepts Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. Paul has shown there is no other way to be reconciled to God accepted through Jesus Christ. Then, Paul wrote, “in order that we.” The “we” refers to Paul and the Jewish Christians. The focus is on the first Christians. Jesus was born a Jew as they were the ones God chose to be His people from the time of Abraham. Therefore, the good news of salvation was first preached to the Jews and then to rest of the world as is shown in Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Salvation started with the Jews, but now includes all people who accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. An old woman walked up and tied her old mule to the hitching post. As she stood there, brushing some of the dust from her face and her clothes, a young gunslinger stepped out of the saloon with a gun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other. The gunslinger looked at the old woman and laughed, saying "Hey, old woman, have you ever danced?"
The old woman looked up at the gunslinger and said, "No ... I never did dance ... never really wanted to." A crowd had gathered as the gunslinger grinned and said, "Well, you old bag, you're gonna dance now," as he started shooting at the old woman's feet. By Jim Lewis What is your bank balance? Rather personal isn’t it? You probably have a pretty good idea what it is but for most of us, that information is between us, our banker and if we have one, our spouse. Banking for most, “Middle Class” folks, it is a fluctuating, week to week, month to month, year to year process and if we are fortunate and plan well, there is a slowly building savings, college fund and/ or retirement account. There is wisdom in this and as the saying goes, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” This is a great idea for the here and now, but what about after this life? Is there investment banking in Heaven and if there is, are you failing to plan?
God and His word say that there are eternal investments that we can make here in this world. Talk about long term investing! In fact, these investments are one of the major reasons that each one of us is born. The problem is that many of us don’t realize it, acknowledge it or focus on it. We get caught up in the necessary busyness of life and live with a, here and now instead of a there and then perspective. God wants our actions here to be from an eternal perspective. He wants us to live each day with ETERNITY in mind and to live in the future tense. Canton Fitness Center Worst Ways to Lose Weight
We spend a lot of time talking about what TO DO when it comes to losing weight, but what about what NOT TO DO? Here are some of the worst things to do when trying to lose weight. Don’t be surprised or offended if you have done some of these….live and learn, just don’t repeat the same mistakes. CLEANSES: Even juice cleanses can be a poor choice when trying to lose weight. A diet void of solid food is dangerous to the digestive system. The body is pretty amazing and has its own built in “detox” system. Trying to cleanse or detox the body with some of the methods out there messes with the body’s natural balance. One of the worst culprits is juice cleansing along with fasting. ELIMINATING CARBOHYDRATES: Totally eliminating a macronutrient group is a formula for failure. This is unsustainable in the long run and removes a major source of energy for the body. In addition, many vital nutrients are cut from the diet when all carbohydrates are eliminated. Generally the “bad” carbs are processed, refined starches and sugars which are often combined with fat. By Esther Butcher Tuesday morning and the rain came down. We needed some more rain this year, but easy rain during the day.
Sunday Cindy Putnam and Brian Crandell, Virginia Ward, Bill and Alicia Haris and Quianna went to a 7th birthday party for Cameron Park at his home in Van Etten, NY, grandson of Cindy. It was a nice party. Happy 7th birthday to Cameron Park who will celebrate his birthday on October 2nd. The Granville Center Church of Christ hosted a hayride and hot dogs on Sunday evening. The wagon looked pretty full when it went down the drive way. Everyone had a good time. My apologies to those of you who look forward to news of Sister Street each week. We were in Indianapolis last week and even though I took my writing material with me (pen and paper) I never wrote a word. The reason the "news" was pushed back was because newest great-grandson Dominic Watkins arrived on Wednesday the 16th and of course we arrived Thursday the 17th. Both Mom Devynn and baby are doing fine. I spent a lot of time on the patio with the dog.
Although the trip was planned for several weeks I still managed to forget two of the medicines I take daily. One of them is quite important so after a couple of phone calls I had a partial refill sent to a pharmacy only a few blocks away from where we were. The young lady pharmacist spent about an hour on the phone and computer with my insurance carrier and doctor. She was very patient and competent. By Lorelei Colton We’ve had some pretty typical weather for autumn as we headed into the fall season with the morning temperature last Wednesday on the 23rd a crisp 39˚ here in south Alba at 6 am. And, it was pretty foggy as well. But the sun came out bright and sunny for Ron and I (and Palin, of course) to head to Bloomsburg to set up the Minnequa Grange booth exhibit in the fair’s Agricultural building. It was a gorgeous day and a beautiful ride – taking route 220 down and traveling through Benton and Millville – quaint little villages and towns – and arriving at the fairgrounds at a little before 3 pm – the opening of the building for such exhibits. We had the booth set up in just a little over 2 hours which got us back home while still daylight which is always a good thing. Coming home we did see several deer in fields grazing and hoped they heard us tell them to “stay there!” Though it was a very successful day indeed we were still pretty bushed when we got home – doing these kinds of things at our age…
I want to wish my mother-in-law Beverly Colton a very “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” on October 1st – the day after mine. When we travel down to the Bloomsburg Fair we always bring home her birthday present – a box of salt water taffy, usually the anise flavor. It seems nice to be able to get her something she truly likes – as, what does she really need? Her new little dog, “Libby”, is a cute little miniature short-haired dachshund who, I swear, must have a little Jack Russell in her as she always springs (literally) into action when I stop nights after work to pick up the newspaper and visit a bit. She’s such a nice pet and so good for mother to have around. Fr. Michael McCormick Dear Readers,
What has one eye, one hand and one foot? Sounds like a joke until you read the 9th chapter of the Gospel of Mark where it is written: If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut if off. With all the holiday recipes we are about to preview, we didn't want to leave out our friends who have to have gluten free recipes. They too need to have a great holiday season.
So with this in mind, here are a few recipes which feature main course meals. In a couple of weeks, they will be included in the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas recipe lists. Would like to wish Rose Smith a speedy recovery she had knee surgery. Did any one see the bikes on Sunday it was the annual Tour Da Shunk bike ride it was a beautiful day for a bike ride. By Kathie Lepper It's a bit cooler here on "The Ridge" this Monday morning.
I've been hearing the sounds of fall lately. The little critters singing outside my window in the evening hours. The creaking bones going on around here, etc. At least the heat has been turned on so we are prepared if it turns cold suddenly. I didn't make the Coffee Hour on Thursday, but I'm sure it was a good time. LaVonne McNett, our coffee time coordinator, is home after her trip and always makes it an enjoyable event. LaVonne left for her trip, Sept. 18th, she went with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and David Tice from Mansfield to Ft. Wayne, Ind. where they visited LaVonne's other daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jim Lagemann. While there they attended church and the Johnny Appleseed Festival. They also toured three lakeside cottages as Linda and Jim are hoping to buy one of them. They played bingo at the local American Legion building, Monday evening and returned home Sept 21. By John Shaffer John Boehner, Republican Congressman from the 8th district of Ohio since 1991, is resigning from Congress as of the end of October. Mr. Boehner has been the Republican leader in the House since 2007 and Speaker of the House since 2011.
As a backbencher was a solid conservative, and a reformer of the way the House did business, and he continued to fight for smaller government and conservative principles as he advanced in the leadership positions. He opposed President Obama's agenda, but in the face of a Democratically controlled Senate until 2015 and "the 60-vote rule" since the Republicans won the majority, it seemed to many that his fight was not as effective as it should have been, given that Mr. Boehner's party has its largest House majority since the 1920s. Mr. Boehner's resignation was a surprise but not a shock, as there were a number of House members who were growing weary to see their majority rendered ineffective, and there is talk that the Senate may also be ripe for a similar step, with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell the next to step down. |
