By Evangelist Eric Smith For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight: in love 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ in accordance with his pleasure and will”, Ephesians 1: 4-5. The next portion of the sentence we are pursuing is the end of verse 4 and verse 5. The whole sentence is verse 3 through verse 14 of Ephesians chapter 1. Nelson defines “predestination” as “God’s plan for the eternal salvation of those who choose Him”.
By Jim Lewis Are you familiar with the phrase, “Running around like a chicken with his head cut off?” Maybe you’ve seen it; the headless bird runs full speed in random directions ramming into things and flopping about. A decapitated snake will writhe and thrash about for quite a while and like the chicken will act, “alive” for quite a while., but they are dead and just don’t know it.
By Richard & Joyce Pratt I guess we are getting some summer weather this past week. It sure is a good time to try out a new air conditioner if the old one isn't working right.
I guess that what most of the residents are doing is staying pretty close to the air conditioners and out of the heat. Can't say I blame them. It's good to see Mary Bailey, Sandy Benson, Cheryl Miller are all home from the hospital or rehab. Best wishes to all the rest who are suffering from the heat. By Anna Belle Leonard The Gillett Senior Citizens met on a sunny July 16th. Most of the members signed up to have breakfast at the Wellsburg Diner next Wednesday, July 22nd.

We want to send out get well wishes to Mary Carneige this week. Happy Birthday wishes go out to Josh Lundy from Wysox. Felicia Buickus and Dustin Hotalen brought their beautiful little girl Skye Hotalen home on Father's Day. She weighed eight pounds, five ounces. They are from Troy. Grandmother is Tink Gallagher and Donna Wandell, Great Grandma. Sure hope you are all ready for a great week at the Troy Fair! See you next week. I have heard from several gardeners that the gardens have too much rain and their crops are not going to amount to anything. One fellow complained his squash was all turning yellow. Well, I have a lot of the same thing and I thought that's what I wanted.
I've also read about not touching string beans or cultivating them when wet. I think I dispelled that myth. Out of the five or six plants that survived the great rabbit attack I have picked two times and they are still covered with blossoms. By Esther Butcher The weather has been pretty good. I don’t like it when it’s so very humid.
Gary and I had a good week visiting with our kids and grandkids. Congratulations to our granddaughter Allyson Butcher, Roaring Branch, on winning second place in their district. I found a few items in the trusty newsbox this morning and according to them, most folks found the weekend favorable for their outings.
I know that Jeannette May and I enjoyed St. MIchael's Parish Picnic at Bulkley's Pond on Sunday. There was a good turn out and lots of good food to try. We even took time to walk one of the trails they have in the wooded area. Of course the younger crowd was enjoying Ben's famous swimming pond and slide. National Hot Dog Day
Since July 23 is National Hot Dog Day, the chef thought it might be nice to see the variety of things you can put on your hot dog. There are relishes, onions, mustard, ketchup, sauerkraut, which everyone knows. But how about the items listed below? By Lois Ribovich The class of '56 met at the Midway on Tuesday Those who came were, Woody and Pon McKenzie, Ben and Peggy Bulkley, Shirley Pepper, Bob Bond, Jane and Ed Moore, Ginny McDonald, Dwayne Buchanan, Steve and Lois Ribovich.
Now '56'ers - our annual picnic will be August 22 at Bulkley's pond. Come at noon, will eat around o'clock. Bring a dish to pass. Notice the date change. Due to circumstances the date had to changed. Try to make it. By John Shaffer Flags have been in the news recently more that usual. President Obama ordered flags flown at half-staff to honor the Marines and the sailor who were murdered at Chattanooga. The President did not lead on this issue – he didn’t exactly follow. It would be more accurate to say he trailed, and far behind.Congress already had lowered the flag in homage to the victims, as had the governors of at least six states. We don’t want to characterize his delay, but he has a tendency not to get involved with issues unless they serve his ideological proclivities; and given that he refuses to call terrorism by that name, we are not shocked that he wasn’t very interested in honoring its victims.
By John Shaffer America suffered another atrocity a few days ago when a man murdered four Marines and a Sailor at a reserve installation in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The incident still is under investigation, and the President has described the killings as “heartbreaking.” That’s a word that we would think better used when a child’s puppy is hit by a car or a man dies on his honeymoon. It doesn’t have the proper ring to describe an illegal act of violence. The President also called them "senseless," as if it was impossible to figure out why it happened. Perhaps if the President was not so reluctant to use the words “Islamic” or “terrorism” he would understand it better.
By Charles Rockwell As I take pen in hand, truly I do, the thought comes to me, "Do ten-year-old boys still yearn to go overnight in a tent?"
Ralph Summers, Ed Payne, and I were good neighborhood pals and probably about ten years old. We decided to borrow my older brother Martin's pup tent. He was an active Boy Scout. The tent was to be in the horse pasture on the bank of the Mill Race under a large beech tree. Six trivia questions to see how much history you really know.
Be honest; it's kind of fun and revealing. If you don't know the answer make your best guess. Answer all of the questions (no cheating) before looking at the answers. And, no, the answers to these questions aren't all Barack Obama. |
