By William Bower ![]() Sometimes I find it difficult to think of a topic to write about but then I’ll either see something in nature or Mary Alice will ask about a flower, tree or animal and my problem is solved. However, I sometimes receive letters and pictures from readers referring to something in nature that they have seen.
By Richard & Joyce Pratt There has been summer weather this past week with high 80s and lots of humidity. There was also some much needed rain. That rain is sure helping the gardens and flower beds with plenty of blooms. Between all the flower beds, I counted at least 6 different colors on the Iris. Plus peonies, and pansies, and many more I don't even know what they are called.
By Esther Butcher I think we’re getting enough rain. My yard was really dry as we didn’t get any rain for a while, it kept going around us.
Esther Butcher with sister Gloria and Bill Johnson went to Bloomsburg to the court house last Wednesday and on to a reception at Bill and April Barnes new home. We are now legal grandparents of twins, Zachary and Danica. The Court room was full of family and friends. Everyone had a good time. By Lorelei Colton We finally got the entire garden in, and I can honestly say that it is one of the most beautiful vegetable gardens we’ve ever had. Since Ron’s dad “Pa” was alive, anyway. He was the “workhorse” in the garden – tilling, planting, weeding, de-bugging – you name it. He was great at it. And, Ron and I both agree that he would be proud of ours this year. We even have blossoms on the tomatoes and pepper plants, because they came from Lancaster County and seem to be quite a bit ahead of the varieties and plants around here right now.
By Lois Ribovich Ralston lost another longtime resident, Archie Vroman. Archie could be seen walking up and down Greens Hill, where he lived. Well, if you know that hill that wasn't an easy chore. He always took the time to stop and chat awhile. We will miss seeing him walking up and down the street. May he rest in peace. Sympathy goes out to Lavonna and all the kids.
By Statton "Lefty" Schaeffer My Favorite Commencement Address
It was a bright sunshiny day at the “brand new” Beaver Stadium on June 11th, 1960. My better half Helen and I were part of that year's graduating class. We were cocksure we would and could, solve all of the problems of the world. However, our commencement speaker was the President of the University, Dr. Eric Walker who proceeded to verbally “slap us upside the head” with words of wisdom that remain imprinted on my psyche to this day. Let me pass on Dr. Walker's insight and advice to members of the new graduating classes of 2015. “Ladies and gentlemen of the Class of 1960.” He stated with a slight hint of the British accent that remained in his speech pattern despite thirty plus years as a newly minted American. By Richard & Joyce Pratt It doesn't seem like it should be time for Memorial Day yet. But ready or not it is.
Memorial Day is referred to as the unofficial start of summer with the temperatures in the high 80s. I think it is. The gardens are looking good but they need watering already. Saturday was the last pot luck dinner until September with a pretty good turn out and a good variety of dishes to be sampled. Nobody ever goes away hungry from the pot luck dinner. By Anna Belle Leonard May 21st was dedicated to celebrating Memorial Day. A musical couple, Bob and Linda Lee, from Towanda entertained with some "oldies but goodies" and several patriotic songs.
They stayed and enjoyed lunch with us. Lester Maynard has been in the hospital again and we were glad to see him back today. By Terren Smith Hi, all. I'm upset. I sat at the polls for 3 1/2 hours with Victor Lawson on my right and Jerry Frantz on my left. And did we get our picture in the paper? No. Well, let me tell you, that would have been the best picture in the paper. Do you know why? Well, I'll tell you why - a thorn on my left and a thorn on my right and a big beautiful rose in the middle.
I'm disappointed there is not much "news" this week but in order to make news someone has to do something.
A big thank you to some of my neighbors for cutting the grass at the Rich Way property. I guess the owners have abandoned the place. I rushed the planting and because of my haste I had to cover the tomatoes and cucumbers. And, yes, Marge - I planted the peppers a few days after the frost. I have most everything well mulched with the grass clippings I stole or I mean obtained from Rich's yard. By Elaine Gee I hope everyone had a nice weekend.
Shirley Huslander and Phyllis Johnston called on me, Sunday. Hazel was up and spent Saturday and Sunday with Roger. I was glad to hear my daughter-in-law came home from the hospital, Saturday. By Lorelei Colton First, I must make a correction to last week’s column. It was Lois Myers that had joined us on a trip to Rochester for the annual lilac festival. Sorry for the error. My mistake became apparent when we all were sitting around the table after Rural Brotherhood last Thursday at our Alba Church, eating, cleaning up, visiting, and commenting on the vases of lilacs on the tables, and that some had come from the bush purchased on our excursion.
By Lois Ribovich Hope everyone had a safe and busy Memorial Day.
Steve and I attended the Canton Alumni Banquet. It was Steve's 60th class reunion. A great night, the food was excellent. We saw many that we haven't seen since graduation. They met at the Moose, Sunday for dinner and reminiscing. The class will meet at the Midway June 1 at noon. By Kathie Lepper I was pleasantly surprised to have enough news for a column here on "the Ridge" this Memorial Day. A few folks were out early to see the parade. Charlotte Tillotson was out to watch and wondered where all those fire trucks involved in the parade were kept. I couldn't tell her. - I don't know either.
Carol Brown also was at the Parade and commented that it was really nice and good to see the Veterans being honored. |
