How To Make New Friends
In my efforts to keep all of you up to date on what is going on out there in the nutty, crazy, criminal, insane world outside our safe, sound, isolated area of the world, referred to by all the bad guys and those who refer to us as "Those Endless Mountains Country Folks." By Evangelist Eric Smith “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.” 1st Peter 5:10-11. Peter is bringing this letter to a close. He is encouraging his readers to remain faithful by reminding them they are not alone. As a Christian you are never alone for the Spirit of God lives in you to help guide you in your walk of faithfulness. Realizing this as a Christian will help you to overcome the temptations which come your way.
By Jim Lewis “Take it or leave it.” Have you heard it before? Used it? It usually means that you are at the end of the line during some kind of negotiation. Buying a car, back and forth offers on a home or even a yard sale transaction come to my mind. Whether you are the one buying or selling, it always comes down to a, “make or break” point. How bad do you want to sell it and how badly do you want it? It can be fun to haggle and at least, “ think” you’ve got a good deal, but as I grow older the more I’ve grown to appreciate complete information about the product and the non-negotiable, “priced as marked” approach. I don’t like to have to ask how much something is. That is at least when I’m making the larger and more important decisions. How about you?
By Richard and Joyce Pratt I guess summer has arrived early with temperatures in high eighties and even some in the 90s breaking records for this time of years.
The gardens and flower beds are beginning to show signs of needing rain. The early spring flowers are gone and the Iris and many other summer flowers are soon going to be in bloom. By Anna Belle Leonard The Gillett Senior Citizens Meeting on May 7th opened by announcing who picked the correct Kentucky Derby winner at our last meeting. Walt Brudnik, Jr. was the only one who picked American Pharoah.
Several people have May birthdays including Lester Maynard who will be eighty-eight on the 11th. By Esther Butcher The warm days have been really warm, lots of lilacs this year. I picked some of my Mom’s Black night lilacs for the kitchen tonight. They smell so nice.
Gerald and Marjorie Pratt of Windfall spent a few days with their son and family, Mark and Chris Pratt of Southport, NC. Fr. Michael McCormick Dear Readers,
This time of year is filled with promise and hope. Our “babies” are graduating from High School and even college. The flowers are in full bloom. School is ending for the summer. We celebrate our mothers on Mother’s Day. We renew our subscriptions for our allergy meds. And for Catholics throughout the United States, May is also traditionally the month for First Holy Communions. By Lorelei Colton As I sit here at the computer, it’s Monday early evening, and the indoor-outdoor thermometer is reading a balmy 80 degrees. My arthritis is rearing its ugly head, and we really need the rain, but the TV weatherman couldn’t predict that we would get anything of any significance. It’s been what my husband Ron would call “beastly hot” these past couple of days – which seems like just yesterday we were complaining about how cold it was. We put our couple of window air conditioners in over the weekend which helped us to sleep better, but they’re saying by Wednesday temps should return to the normal for this time of year – high in the 60’s, not the 80’s. There is even a chance of a slight frost this week, which is certainly not good news – especially as our few fruit trees are loaded with blossoms and it would be a terrible shame for them to get frosted out.
Well, the garden that was not to be has been planted and now the waiting begins. I know some of the things are possibly in too early but when the temperature is in the eighties for several days it's hard to wait for Memorial Day. I have filled all available space with a number of varieties of squash, herbs and of course, onions. Now, after waiting only three or four days I will check each day looking for something green.
By Kathy Lepper Most of the mothers here on "The Ridge" enjoyed their special day on Sunday. The weather was about perfect, so cookouts and picnics were the norm, although some had dinner with their children at their favorite restaurants.
Jeannette May and I enjoyed the Mother's Day breakfast prepared by the Knights of Columbus after attending Mass on Sunday. The weather has finally warmed up enough that it is time to start thinking about getting out the old barbecue grill. But how can you cook things which add a little spice to you menu? Here are some barbecue recipes for a variety of meats. I have not tried some of these, since I am a plain Jane and like my food cooked well and without any sauces.
Last week I saw Buzzy Boyer taking his mother-in-law out for her 85th birthday. Happy Birthday to Elsie Marsh. Have many more.
The Ralston School Reunion committee will meet May 17 at the Book Swap Shop at 2 pm to discuss the upcoming reunion on June 13. Hope all the Mothers had a great Mother's Day. I saw kids going to the creek to swim on Sunday. Can you believe its only the middle of May. It seems like last week we were shoveling snow. Ralston Bible School will be June 8 through 12th. 10 am - 12 pm. There will be a light lunch afterward. This is at the church. All are welcome. By John Shaffer Last week we questioned why people in Baltimore would riot and destroy millions of dollars of public and private property because someone died in police custody. As we said, there are abundant legal channels through which such cases can be handled. Burning down stores is not the answer. The protestors said they were seeking justice for Freddie Gray, but we want to point out one fact: since January 1, 2015, there have been 88 homicide victims in Baltimore. The world knows the name of one of them – Freddie Gray, the man who died in police custody. Like Mr. Gray, almost all of the other eighty-seven are black.
By Canton Fitness Center How To Get Results
If you have driven by the Canton Fitness Center lately, you might have noticed my new sign and that I am looking for a few people who are motivated and determined to get body changing results. By William Bower Along RT#14 (just outside of Troy) a new wetland has been developed to replace a wetland destroyed on Armenia Mountain. The state requires that a new wetland be developed when a wetland is destroyed.
