By Kathy Lepper It seems good to see folks out in the gazebo and on the porch enjoying the lovely May days here on "The Ridge." The ladies who do a fine job keeping the flower beds so pretty make it even nicer to be out. Kudos to them!
I think there were nine residents at the Coffee Chat Time on Thursday. I left to see Stephen A. Hartung DPM who was here to see his patients that day. There might have been more folks at Coffee Chat later. By Fr. Michael McCormick Dear Readers,
Pope Francis, in a homily earlier this week said that a culture that does not value "the stable and life-giving covenant between a man and woman is certainly a loss for everyone. We must bring honor back to marriage and the family.” By Richard & Joyce Pratt We are finally getting some beautiful spring weather. The flower beds are looking pretty good with lots of different flowers in bloom.
The gardeners are at work trying to make the gardens nice. We noticed some of the lawn mowers are at work as well. Last Wednesday, we had a well attended fire meeting with Cindy Roupp, Jim Bailey, and Byron Gowin. We are very sorry to hear Byron is going to leave us again for hip replacement. We want to wish him the best with his surgery and a speedy recovery. By Canton Fitness Center Two weeks ago I featured information on 5 of the 15 major hormones that impact metabolism. The first five were insulin (fat storer), glucagon (fat burner), ghrelin (hunger hormone), thyroid hormone (metabolic manager) and cortisol (stress hormone). Just getting these 5 in balance in order to keep weight in check is tough enough, but add at least 10 more to the mix and you can see how complicated weight loss is.
By William Bower As a young boy, I remember our uncle telling us kids the legend about the wendigo (aka windago), a story that made quite an impression on me. For many years, if I was alone in the woods and the wind began blowing, I would cautiously look about to make sure that it was not the wendigo.
Many of these legends live on when told to young and old gathered around camp fires. Although these legends are told to temporarily scare those gathered, there are people that actually believe some stories, such as those about Big Foot and the wendigo. Hummingbirds - 2015
If you have hummingbird feeders, get them out immediately. We have kept careful records of the first returning male Ruby-throated hummingbirds and the earliest we have observed one is May 2nd; although we have had reports of some sightings in late April. Like most returning migrants, the male return first. The females are usually 7 to 10 days later to arrive. It is a special time of year for us because at the same time we observe Red-Breasted Grosbeaks, Baltimore Orioles and about every other year Indigo Buntings. We are putting out an oriole feeder this year. By Kathy Lepper It's rather quiet here on the 3rd floor as I'm checking for news here on "The Ridge". Maybe everyone is sleeping in on this dreary and chilly Monday morning. I did find a couple news items in the news box earlier. I always appreciate those who take advantage of the mailbox.
As I checked the third floor, my sister Jeannette May said that she saw her grandson Cameron May at his mother's home on Thursday this last week. Cameron had just returned home from having a checkup with his doctor. Jeannette said Cameron seemed in good spirits and doing well since his accident. While there she also saw her little great-grandsons Tayton and Tommy Thompson who always brighten everyone's day. By Fr. Michael McCormick On this Fifth Sunday of Easter we read the passage where Jesus identifies himself as the true vine. There are seven "I Am" sayings in the gospel of John. I Am the true vine is the last of these sayings.
I Am the bread of life - 6:35 I Am the light of the world - 8:12 & 9:5 I Am the gate for the sheep - 10:7-9 I Am the good shepherd - 10:11-14 I Am the resurrection and the life - 11:25 I Am the way and the truth and the life - 14:6 I Am the true vine - 15:1-5 By Rev. Kenneth Marple, M.A. Some Things Aren't Worth Collecting
People who grew up in the depression collect all sorts of things. "You never know when hard times will come and we'll need this," they say. When my parents moved off their farm to retire, the farm shop was full of old parts in new boxes. It was dad's practice to put the old part back into the new box after every repair. After all, it still worked a little - didn't it? Warning Signs
Sean is the vicar of a Protestant parish in The Bronx, New York and Patrick is the priest at the Roman Catholic Church across the road. One day they are seen together, erecting a sign in front of the Protestant Church which says: By Evangelist Eric Smith “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1st Peter 5:6-7. The main purpose of this letter was to encourage believers who were suffering because of their faith in Jesus Christ. It is no different today. Many Christians in the world today are suffering for the same reason, they are Christians. We also, see it happening more and more in America.
By Richard & Joyce Pratt We sure have had some real nice days lately with a few showers mixed in, but we need the April showers to bring May flowers which seem to be coming along beautifully. Tulips and daffodils are in full bloom.
Thanks to the little deer repellent we have the beautiful tulips this year not like last year when the deer ate them all. I read Bill Bower's article about trouble with deer last year as well. I hope they had better luck this year. The pot luck dinner last Saturday was cancelled due to the Maple Festival, Too many other things going on. It sure was a beautiful weekend for the festival. By Elaine Gee Well, I am getting around early this week.
Hazel got moved to Hillcrest Apartments on Tuesday. Her daughter Betty came down to help her. Harold and Marsha Benson came over from Canton to help. Ron and Vi called on me, Wednesday. Virginia Wood had a fall and broke her arm in two places and is in the Bradford County Manor. I just heard about it last week. I haven't forgotten you Ginny. You are in my prayers. Although i am not allowed to make a big deal about it the fact that it did happen remains. One can deny a birthday over and over but time marches on. So without calling it a birthday, how about a non-birthday wish to my wife. No, I won't reveal how many.
It must be spring because not only is the grass growing but I have seen bees and bugs ad one gentleman stopped to advise us the woodchucks are in grave danger. I removed the snowplow from the tractor and began installing the mower deck. Due to my advanced age and receding memory things were not going according to plan so I swallowed my pride and accepted my son-in-law's offer of help. He said he would put the deck on in five minutes. Let's see - that was last Tuesday. |
