Last week while in Elmira making our furniture delivery, we stopped at Rubin's' newsstand (yes it's still there) on Water Street and I bought the April issue for $5.99. Then on the very next day at the Mega-Mart I spotted the March issue and even though my allowance was just about used up, I picked it up and when I checked out, along with a few other items, this one cost $7.99. I once again decided on a subscription, it is much cheaper.
While looking for the information, address, etc., I noticed the price per single copy was $5.99 I fired off two letters, one to the store's headquarters and one to the publisher. Will the price of two stamps, several copies and my frustration be much compensations for the $2.00 difference in price? Make sense? Of course it won't, but it sure makes me feel better. Here it is a week later and no response from either.
Sister Street has now become Cinder Street. That along with the run-off from the melting snow makes the street really yucky. I actually took a walk up on the bridge to check out the "crick" when it was 55 degrees. It was kind of neat to see water running under and over the ice.
As you may have noticed in the paper last week some of the members of the council in Alba will need to be written in this year. Somehow the petitions that are needed were not provided by the county election board, but we were told we could drive to Towanda on March 10th, bring it back to Alba and gather the signatures required and return the form to Towanda by 5:00 p.m. on the same day. I don't think so. I guess I should have attended the firemen's dinner to kick off my campaign.
One more thing about the magazine purchase. When I was in the checkout process I noticed the price on the scanner, when I made a remark about the $7.99 price, the associate asked in her a "I don't want to be here anyway' voice, "Well, do you want it or not?" I did so I could write the letter of complaint.
As I sit here Saturday morning watching the so-called news I wonder why the reports of a police chief being fired, but the boro manager (Edwardsville, PA won't talk about it. Also a 53-year old man is charged with rape of an eight year old girl yet leading the news and taking more time and showing more video is the fact that Pottsville canceled its St. Patrick's Day parade, but be sure to attend Mass and then the bars or pubs will open at 9:00 a.m. Now that's the news.
I think I figured out why Hillary will never be President. She, even after many, many, years of practice, simply is not a good enough liar. Her press conference last week was one of the funniest 15 minutes that I have seen on daytime TV in a long time.
Of course, Mrs. Obama dancing with Ellen Degeneres the day after two police officers were shot in Ferguson, MO ranks right up there. And our golf-playing President on Jimmy Kimmel Late Night show, I'm told (too late for me) was also a joke.
We, along with about 45 or 50 more folks attended the town meeting at the Rialto Theatre to discuss the upcoming closing of Canton's Arnot Medical facility and the subsequent loss of our longtime doctor John Kirkowski. Several soon to be former patients related personal stories of this man's care and dedication to this area for four decades. Although representatives from Arnot were invited to attend and explain the decision or answer the burning question on everyone's mind, they chose not to show up or respond. If you have not signed one of the many petitions or sent a letter to the folks at Arnot I urge you to do so. You may direct your concerns and comments to Dr. Robert Lambert or Dr. Kimberly Kaffen same address: 600 Ivy St., Suite 102, Elmira, NY 14905.
As I mentioned earlier, the good news usually comes after all the nonsense so here it is: Happy anniversary to Marvin and Clara Woodward on 57 years together. When Marvin told me this at last week's Council meeting, my first words were "Wow Clara should receive an award." Marvin agreed.
