Fred was born November 18, 1939 In Troy, son of the late Robert and Ethel (Wood) Barrett. He was a graduate of Troy High School Class of 1955. Fred retired from the North Penn Gas Company where he worked on their pipelines. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in East Smithfield.

Patricia “Pat” Stage, 76, Alba, PA passed away January 13, 2017 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. Patricia Ann, “Pat” to family and friends, was born October 12, 1940 in Canton Township, PA. She was a daughter of the late Robert VanNoy, Madeline “Pat” (Allen) Bellows and step-daughter of Maxwell Bellows. Pat was hard working and well respected in her career as a Para Legal. For many years, she worked with Attorney Epstein in Towanda and later with Attorney Patrick J. Barrett III in Canton. She also will be remembered as kind, compassionate and a lovely person by all who knew her. Pat enjoyed doing many things during her life; times shared with family and friends were always special to her. She was a member of Wheel Inn Club in Roaring Branch, the Canton WOTM Lodge 981 and Canton’s V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 714. Surviving is her son, Michael G. Chopak of Alba, a brother and sister; Robert (Janet) VanNoy of Mansfield and Cleone Schweikart (Galen Norton) of Ogdensburg, sister-in-law, Debbie Gardner of Prattsburg, NY, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Frederick J. Bryans Jr., 93, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017.
He was born in Buffalo, NY, on June 30, 1923, to Frederick J. Bryans, Sr. and Anne Tisdall Bryans. Fred was a World War II veteran who served from January 1943 through November 1945 in the 1st combat battalion engineers. His unit received the Presidential Unit Citation for Battle of the Bulge service. After his discharge, he worked with his father and brother in Bryans and Sons Paintings. At the age of 40, Fred attended college to enter the ministry. He served churches in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, Delaware, North Carolina, and Florida. He was also an accomplished organist. Frank Tillotson, 91, longtime resident of Leroy, was called home to Heaven on Wednesday morning, January 11, 2017 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. Franklin Richard Tillotson, "Frank” to family and friends, was born July 19, 1925 in Canton, the son of the late Milo Denton and Leah Maude (Welch) Tillotson. Frank served our country during WWII and earned the rank of Corporal while in the U.S. Army’s Company D Infantry. On Nov. 4, 1946, he married the former Madeline Mott in Canton. They were blessed with 66 years together before her passing on March 19, 2013. Frank attended the Independent Baptist Church of Towanda. While always a hard worker and dedicated to the operations of their dairy farm, Frank was a “jack of all trades” type person. In earlier years, he also enjoyed logging and drove truck hauling cars out of Muncy, PA. He will be lovingly remembered as the family’s Patriarch; it was Frank who nick-named all his grandchildren. He also was patriotic, a collector of all things and he enjoyed reading. Surviving are his children, Karin Gilbert and Linda (Wayne) Millard all of Leroy; seven grandchildren; Dave (Jen) Gilbert, Timothy (Crystal) Millard, Jesse (Amy) Millard, Joe (Bonnie) Millard, Sarah (Steve) Beers, Maggie (Randy) Gilliland and Anna Warnick; 17 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. Alfred O. Horton, Sr., 81, Cameron Mills, NY peacefully went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Alfred was born February 27, 1935 in Waverly, NY to Clifford C. and Mille R. (Adams) Horton. He was a 1954 graduate of Canton High School. He married Charlotte Woodworth on November 1, 1969 at the Hornell Baptist Church. Mr. Horton served his country in the Army from 1954 to 1958; transitioning to reserves until 1962. He was an innovative tool maker for Corning Glass Work for 35 years, retiring in 1997. Alfred was also a Methodist Lay Preacher for most of his life, preaching at the Cameron Mills and Rathbone Methodist Churches, as well as filling in at other area churches when needed. He had a passion for his family, his church, and the many lives he and Charlotte made a difference in. His 40 years as a foster parent is a testament to his character. Alfred never asked anything of anyone. He always made sure that if someone was in need, he was there to help them. Dawn B. Miller, 77, of Troy, passed away Monday, January 9, 2017 at the Sayre Healthcare Center. Born April 12, 1939 in Canton, Dawn was the only daughter of the late Marletta (Rhodes) and James Ardell Bassett. She graduated from Canton High School with the class of 1957. Dawn enjoyed her work as a caregiver for the elderly and at Martha Lloyd Community Services in Troy. An outgoing strong-willed person, Dawn told it as she saw it and usually got what she wanted. She also often was a person to give help to someone in need. Dawn loved children. She was an avid horsewoman from an early age and cared about the welfare of all animals. Surviving are her four children; Leslie (Bill) Ellsworth of Troy, Kevin (Brenda) Hicks of Columbia Cross Roads, William (Treena) Miller of Durell and Michael (Candyce) Hicks of Oneonta, AL, 11 grandchildren; Robert and Gerald Hicks, John W. Dowling, Cynthia Collins, Sadie and Brooke Miller, Kevin “J.R.”, Sheena and Angela Hicks, Lisa and Kahleen Hicks, Letha R. Tomlin, 101, Orrstown, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2017 in the Chambersburg Hospital. She was born April 4, 1915 in Masten, Sullivan County, Letha was a daughter of the late Jasper and Almyra Walker Robbins. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, R. Lee Crawley, her second husband, Keith Tomlin, and four brothers and four sisters. John E. Newhart, 63, Troy, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at the Bradford County Manor. John, “Butch” to family and friends, was born in Troy on March 2, 1953, the oldest of four children of the late John W. and Elizabeth (Watkins) Newhart. He was a member of Troy High School’s graduating class of 1971. He was employed as a plumber and steamfitter throughout the northeast states for many years until his health failed. John loved and cherished his children. He also enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. John had many good times at Keuka and Owasco Finger Lakes. He could spend hours just feeding birds, watching wild geese, kayaking and appreciating nature. He also cared very much about animals. Surviving are children; Brittany Conklin, Canton, Jedidiah New-hart and Chekota Newhart both of Troy; siblings; Patricia “Trish” (Gregg) Gregory, Republic, MO, Valerie (Jay) Crosby, Bonney Lake, WA and Willy Newhart, Kent, WA; two “honorary brothers” Chick Debach and Ronnie Yanchuk both of Troy; special aunts; Aunt Joan and Aunt Muriel and many extended family. Carleton “Carty” Wooster, 99, Roaring Branch, (Union Township) passed away at home while surrounded by his family on Wednesday morning, January 4, 2017. Carleton Gregory Wooster was born in Leroy on May 19, 1917. He was the son of the late Carlyle and Ina (Gregory) Wooster. He attended Canton Schools and helped on his father’s farm as a young man. On July 1, 1940, Carty married the former Eleanor McIlwain in Wellsboro. They made their home on Bennett Hill and dairy farmed for many years. Though Carty loved farming all his life, he also enjoyed being involved with people. His work ethic and skills led him to several additional types of work over the years. In the 1950’s he also hauled milk in the Windfall area. In the 1970’s, he was a self-employed carpenter whose projects included the construction of the vet clinic building near Alba and many area roof repairs and home improvements. Carty never really retired, he was blessed with a strong constitution and continued to raise beef cattle and help with farm work. He cut wood with his son Larry until age 90. Carty’s full life of memories and his witty humor made him a great storyteller. In earlier years, he enjoyed many camping trips throughout the area. He was an active member of the Newelltown United Methodist Church, serving as a trustee and often as the church’s handyman. He was a trustee of the Grover Cemetery and was very involved in the former Ogdensburg Grange and the Historical Societies of Union Township and Leroy. Maryetta Ruth Voorhees, 85, Columbia Cross Roads, PA, died Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at her home. She was born May 21, 1931 in Elmira, NY, a daughter of Philo W. and Ruth Maryetta (Johnson) Montanye. Maryetta was predeceased by her husband, James W. Voorhees on Nov. 14, 2003. She was a member of Victory Church, Troy, PA. Maryetta was a member of a bowling league, a book fanatic, enjoyed doing ceramics, crafts, shopping, playing games and cards, decorating her home, and working in her flower gardens and doing yardwork. Maryetta is survived by sons, James D. (Bonita) Voorhees, Lockwood, NY, Ronald (Inez) Voorhees, Springfield, PA, David Voorhees, Granville, PA, Paul D. Voorhees, Springfield, PA; daughters, Sandra (Ronald) Kingsley, Springfield, PA, Darlene (Dan) Close, Troy, PA, Linda Rathbun of Springfield, PA, Jeannie (Jeffrey) Estep, Granville Summit, PA; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Lester Montanye. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Paul Mark Voorhees; sisters, Gertrude Clearwater, Dorothy Conklin and Louise Heath; brothers, Philo Montanye, Jr., Lyman Montanye, Raymond Montayne, Harold Montayne. |
