On the afternoon of Tuesday, February 11, 2020, Dorothy M. Smithgall of Canton passed away peacefully at Bradford County Manor surrounded by her loving family. She was 97 years of age. Born November 15, 1922 in LeRoy Township, she was the daughter of Wesley and Alma (LaMont) Mott. Dorothy was a graduate of Canton High School where she had been involved with the school’s music program, playing the cello and singing with the glee club. While still in high school she met Raymond Smithgall at the home of his aunt, Gladys Tarbox, where Dorothy was employed at the time. A romance soon developed, and they were married June 27, 1942. Upon returning from their honeymoon Ray received notification that his Army Air Corps unit was being deployed. For the duration of the war Dorothy was employed at a defense plant in Elmira, working on the Norden Bomb Site. She quickly rose to the position of supervisor. After the war the Smithgalls purchased their lifelong home on Montague Street in Canton. There they raised their three children and shared 56 years until Ray’s passing in 1998. Dorothy had a career outside of the home, which began with the position of operator for the Canton & LeRoy Farmers’ Telephone Co. back when all phone calls had to go through the operator. Later, she worked at Canford Manufacturing Co. where she worked her way up to supervisor.

Jean Shamro, daughter of John Drassler and Mary (Nagoda) Drassler passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at the Bradford County Manor in Troy, PA.
Jean was born on December 25, 1935 in Carbondale, PA. While growing up in Kearny, NJ, she spent summers in Browndale, PA with her beloved grandmother, Mary Nagoda, and her fun-loving aunts and uncles. Being an only child and the first grandchild in her own mother’s family, Jean loved being spoiled by her relatives and often spoke of her happy summer days in Browndale. Jean graduated from St. Cecelia’s High School in Kearny, NJ and soon afterwards married John Shamro of Uniondale, PA. Jean had always wanted to be a nurse but chose instead to start a family with John. As a newlyweds, Jean and John moved to Manville, NJ where they raised their three children. When her children were young, Jean worked at Baker and Taylor, a book distributor in Bound Brook, NJ, mainly to receive discounts on hard cover books. (Jean was an avid reader, enjoying everything from pulpy novels to Ayn Rand.) Later, Jean, in a way fulfilling her wish to be a nurse, worked as a Nursing Assistant at Carrier Foundation, a private psychiatric facility in Belle Meade, NJ. The staff and patients at Carrier loved Jean for her sense of humor, unparalleled work ethic, empathy, and kindness to those who were hurting. Jean worked the graveyard shift at Carrier for many years so she could be home during the day to tend to her children, then later her grandchildren, then ailing husband, then aging parents. Amidst all of this, Jean made a home-cooked meal every night and kept a spotless home. Derek K. Dowling, 36, of Mansfield, Pennsylvania, formerly a long-time resident of Roaring Branch, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, February 2, 2020 following a courageous battle with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and addiction.
Derek Keith was born August 24, 1983 in Whiteman, Missouri to Timothy and Robin (Route) Dowling. He attended Canton Schools and was a graduate of the class of 2001. After graduation he enlisted with the U.S. Navy for 11 years proudly serving during Iraq and the Global War on Terrorism, receiving his honorable discharge in 2012. In 2019 Derek married the love of his life, Beth Swain in Mansfield. Together they raised Beth’s son, Sheldyn Mirra and their two-month-old daughter, Kassandra Joyce Dowling. Derek had a love of the outdoors and enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing. Gaming was another interest that he avidly partook in when he had the chance. He was a member of the Canton VFW, Post 714. Derek possessed a CDL license and took pleasure in driving truck, but most importantly was time spent with his family, which he truly cherished every moment and memory made. Norman L. Cease, 88, a 60-year resident of Chelmsford, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 after a long illness. He was born and raised in Canton, PA by his parents, the late Nelson Cease and the late Beatrice(Robinson) Cease. Upon graduation, he entered Penn State University and then enlisted in the United States Navy serving during the Korean War aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Essex. After his honorable discharge, Mr. Cease began working at Burroughs Inc and Unisys in the computer engineering field, retired and was the owner and operator of CEASE Inc. in Chelmsford for many years. Doris Arline Meehan passed away February 9, 2020. She was the daughter of Arthur Bentley and Elnora VanHorn Bentley. She was born April 6, 1924 in Lopez, PA. She graduated from Lopez High School in 1941 and Dushore High School in 1942.
She held a variety of jobs throughout her life. She worked at Welden Sewing Factory, JCP, W.T. Grant, Owned and operated the Pine Tavern in LaPorte, Meehan Co., The Card Shop in Towanda, and G.T.E. She is a member of the Mildred American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to spend time with family and friends. She and her husband Bob enjoyed camping and traveling and spending winters in Florida during their retirement years. She married Robert E. Meehan on June 12, 1947 and celebrated their 67th anniversary in 2014. Bob died November 15, 2014. She and Bob had a very blessed marriage. She is survived by her 2 children, James Robert Meehan and wife Ann of Ulster and daughter Karen Regina Meehan Tomlinson and husband Theodore of LeRoy. She has 4 grandchildren, Kelly Tomlinson (David Brann), Robert Tomlinson, Michael Meehan (Janet) and Jennifer Switzer. She also has 6 great-grandchildren, Sophie Liddy, Dylan Tomlinson, Tabitha Tomlinson, Emma Switzer, Hannah Switzer, Shelby Switzer. Nephews, Robert (Mary) Guglielmi, William (Trish) Guglielmi, Joe (Bonnie) Gulick and niece, Julie (Rory) Carlesco. Special friend, Lorriane Wisnieski, She resided at the PCH in Towanda where the staff were wonderful to her. Also Guthrie Hospice. Henry “Milt” Ayers, 85, of Columbia Cross Roads, PA, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2020, at his home while surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Burlington on May 24, 1934, Henry Milton was a son of the late Merrill and Florence (Watson) Ayers. On October 27, 1955 he married Phyllis “Phil” Barrett in Gillett. Milton and Phil were very active on their family dairy farm which they both operated from 1964 until the sale of the dairy cows in 1997. Aside from the family dairy, Milt was also employed by the Corning Glass Corporation for 38 years until his retirement in 1990. Those who knew Milt soon realized he was a hard worker. He was a very forgiving person that never held a grudge. He appreciated vintage cars and tractors. Watching car shows on television was a favorite pass-time. Milton enjoyed tinkering on anything with an engine. He was a passionate outdoorsman and enthusiastic professional wrestling fan. Milt treasured his family most in life. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Phyllis as well as a very loving and dedicated father and grandfather. The family memories and their times spent together was held near and dear to his heart. Mary J. (Grimm) Nybeck, of Morris Run, PA, passed away peacefully, Sunday February 9, 2020 at her home while surrounded by family. Ada Louise Eadie Williams, age 97, died January 30, 2020 at the Troy Community Hospital.
She was fortunate to have received exceptional care from the efficient and compassionate nurses and staff at the Troy Community Hospital and from an extraordinary group of kind and patient local caregivers over the last fourteen months for which she and her family are forever grateful. Louise was born November 16, 1922 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania to Joseph G. Eadie and Susan Eva (Raker) Eadie. As a child she was a member of the Lutheran Church, became an accomplished singer, was in high school plays, chorus and choirs and excelled academically. She graduated from Shamokin High School in 1940 and entered Cornell University the same year where she met Evan S. Williams (she always referred to him as her “boyfriend”) who was to become her husband of 62 years until his death in 2005. Louise and Evan married on December 24, 1943, a few months prior to her graduation from Cornell, while Evan was in the Army Air Corps training to become a B-17 bomber pilot. In 1945, carrying her newborn son in a market basket, she traveled alone by train to be with her husband during his training in Ardmore, Oklahoma. After the War Louise and Evan returned to Ithaca to finish his education at Cornell Law School after which they moved to his hometown of Troy, Pennsylvania where Louise was a home economics teacher, Evan began his law practice and they raised their family. Susan “Sue” (Campbell) Hoover, 73, long-time resident of Canton, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home, Saturday morning, February 1, 2020 while surrounded by her loving family.
Susan Elaine was born on September 13, 1946 in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, she was one of four daughters born to the late Franklin Ransford “Randy” and Winona “Nonie” (Priset) Campbell. As a young woman, Sue grew up in the Canton area and attended the Canton Jr & Sr. High Schools. She later, along with her sister Kay, became a co-owner of the former Canton Diner. Together they owned and operated Kay and Sue’s Diner on Troy Street, a popular Canton eatery for 17 years until an unfortunate fire caused its closure in 1989. More recently she can be remembered as being a friendly cashier at the Tops Grocery Store in Canton for many years until her retirement. Susan was a very caring, unselfish person always putting others and especially her family first. Family was what encompassed her life and she will be dearly missed by her devoted husband, children, sisters, grand and great grandchildren. Her favorite pass-times included; Camping, Bowling (she once bowled a perfect 300) and spending the Winter months in Florida. Sue was a talented homemaker and enjoyed cooking, baking and crafting. JoAnn Peyton Inman, 89, of Lewisburg, Pa and formerly of Troy, PA passed away on January 30, 2020 at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa. She was the loving wife of Lyman B. Inman with whom she shared 53 years of marriage. Born in Philadelphia, PA, JoAnn was the daughter of Ruth and George Peyton. JoAnn spent most of her youth with her aunt and uncle, Myron and Blanche Elliot, of Covington, PA. She graduated from Covington High School in 1948 and attended Miss Beardsley’s Private Commercial School (Elmira Business Institute)
JoAnn was a devoted wife and the wonderful mother of five girls. She was an eternal optimist and active in the Eastern Star, the United Methodist Church of Troy, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and a tireless volunteer. She is survived by her daughters and their spouses: Laurell Tarka (Stanley) of Carlisle, PA; Lynne Hopson (Howard) of Union Springs, NY; LuAnn Kitlinski (Blair) of Harrisburg, PA; Lesa Butera (Peter) of Harvey’s Lake, PA and Leone Krul (Kent) of Scipio Center, NY. Other survivors include seven grandchildren: Sarah Baer (Alex) of Lolo, Montana, Mathew Tarka (Danielle) of Lititz, PA; Paul Carson (Joelle) of Salem Massachusetts; Laura Carson of Lemont, PA; Dr. Aileen Wertz ( Dr. Jeffrey ) of Danville, PA; Lauren Butera of Harvey’s Lake, PA and Sophia Kitlinski of New Haven, CT . She is also survived by two great grandchildren Fletcher and Beckett Baer of Lolo, Montana. |
