Robert Glendenning Ives, Jr. 68, of Troy, passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at home. He was the loving husband of Denise (Shanley) Ives. Bob was born on July 6, 1950 in Philadelphia, PA son of the late Robert G. Ives, Sr. and Marianna (Toland) Ives of Philadelphia. Bob was a Renaissance Craftsman and life-long tinkerer. He was an expert carpenter, wood worker, and sleigh maker. Bob was a past member of the Troy Borough Council, took part in coffee groups and Lion’s Club, and enjoyed playing guitar, riding his motorcycle, and spending time on his boat.
On the morning of Saturday, September 8th, 2018, Oliver Clinton Lutz of Troy passed away quietly at the Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit in Towanda. He was 89 years of age.
Born December 21st, 1928 in the town of Delaware, NJ, he was the son of Elmer and Olive (Quick) Lutz. He was the husband of the former Elizabeth Kuhnle, and together they raised four children. Oliver was a man with a strong work ethic. Over the years he was employed at the Troy milk plant and later the Columbia Crossroads milk plant. Eventually he owned and operated his own dairy farm and whitewashed barn interiors in his spare time. Oliver was a man with an abiding faith in the Lord, and he shared that faith with his community when he became a lay minister. He also enjoyed the company of friends, and for several years hosted a Tuesday morning coffee klatch for his friends and neighbors. ![]() Valerie M. Benjamin (Bailey) passed at home with family after a long battle with cancer on September 6th, 2018 in Troy, at the age of 69. Valerie is survived by daughter Laurie (Benjamin) Brown and son in law Michael Brown of Columbia Cross Roads, Son John B Benjamin Jr of Gillett, Daughter Tressa (Benjamin) Brown of Gillett; Grandchildren Maureen House (Michael Putnam) of Troy, Bryant House of Columbia Crossroads, Kody Benjamin (Mikayla Bristol) of Troy, Chase Brown (Kendra Lathrop) of Gillett, Kendra Benjamin(Wesley Utter) of Gillett, Aaren Brown of Columbia Cross Roads; Great granddaughter Aubrey Greene. Sister Marcia Larson of Durango, CO, niece Tina Garrison Maier of Lewisburg, PA, loved as a daughter Sherri Newman of Rome, PA and Angela Martin of Troy. She is preceded in death by Husband John B Benjamin Sr, Mother Mary Josephine Bailey of East Troy, Brother Robert Bailey of Troy, Special Aunt Jessie Hawthorne and Uncle Robert Hawthorne of Canton and beloved dog Benji ![]() Cliff Davis, Jr., 81, of Troy, passed away while surrounded by loved ones at Guthrie Troy Community Hospital on Thursday, September 6, 2018. Born April 2, 1937 in Troy, Clifford Clifton Davis, Jr. was the son of the late Clifford and Viola (Woods) Davis. Cliff believed in a good day’s work and possessed a strong work ethic all of his life. He was a meat cutter with P & C Markets for 42 years, working throughout New York State. In earlier years, he also enjoyed working with the Troy Ambulance Association. The Christmas season was always very special to Cliff and he helped Santa Claus with appointments in the Troy area for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, especially projects with his grandsons, car rides in the country and setting on his back porch feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Leona Reid Ballard of Troy passed away on September 6, 2018 at the Bradford County Manor, where she was recuperating from recent medical issues.
Born in Allentown, PA on October 25, 1928, she was a daughter of Julian Reid and Marjorie Walter Reid. She was raised in Canton and lived in Troy since 1948. Lee was employed for 28 years as Administrative Assistant at Paxar, Inc. (formerly American Silk Label Manufacturing Co), from the time the Troy plant was established. Lee’s favorite hobby was bowling and she bowled on the same local team for 45 years. She attended the East Troy Methodist Church. Mary Jane Cranmer, 74, of the Colonial Towers, Towanda, PA passed away Wednesday morning, September 5, 2018 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Ron Huff in Wysox Township, PA following declining health. Mary was born in Granville Summit, PA on January 10, 1944, the daughter of Jay and Evelyn Elizabeth Kilborn Burgess. She was a graduate of Canton High School with the class of 1962.
Mary was employed by the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company in Mildred, PA and as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Bradford County Manor in West Burlington Township, PA for many years. Mary was a member of the Monroeton United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially with her grandchildren, bus trips with the Towanda Area Senior Citizens group, playing cards with family and friends, gardening, and in early years working at Wheeler’s Greenhouse in Powell, PA. Winifred G. “Winnie” Neff, age 92, of Wellsboro, formerly of Mansfield, passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018 at Carleton Nursing Home. She was born on June 4, 1926 in Renovo, PA, a daughter of Ivan and Mary (Lucas) Swoyer. Prior to her retirement Winnie had been employed at Mansfield University in the English Department. She was a member of the Red Hatters Society in Mansfield and an advisor of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority at MU. Winnie was an avid quilter and enjoyed presenting her writings at the Gmeiner Art Center in Wellsboro, PA.
![]() William “Charlie” Gustafson, 80, of Canton, PA, passed away at his home on Sunday, September 2, 2018. William Charles, “Charlie” to family and friends, was born September 21, 1937, in Jersey Shore, PA, a son of the late Henry and Sarah (Koch) Gustafson. He was a graduate of Jersey Shore High School and continued his education receiving an Associate degree in drafting from the former Williamsport Area Community College. Charlie was a talented carpenter. He worked as a self-employed contractor and will be remembered for the many houses he built throughout Pennsylvania. In later years he operated a plant nursery and raised Christmas trees at his home in Elysburg before he and Elaine moved to Canton and built a home. On Jan. 26, 2002, he married the former Elaine Bovier in the East Canton United Methodist Church. Charlie was an avid hunter who enjoyed the outdoors. He was known for his strong will and work ethic, working as long as his health would permit him. Charlie was a member of the East Canton United Methodist Church and the Watsontown Masonic Lodge No. 401 F&AM. Dorothy L. Pelton, 92, formerly of LeRoy, and Bradenton, FL passed away, Friday, August 31, 2018 at Imperial Healthcare in Neptune, NJ.
Dorothy Lorraine, “Dot” to family and friends, was born April 30, 1926 in Orange NJ, a daughter of the late Clarence S. and Minerva (DeHart) Genung. Dot grew up and lived in Millburn, NJ and Springfield NJ. On July 19, 1952, she married Edgar Duane Pelton and together they shared 50 years of loving marriage until Duane’s passing on March 18, 2002. In earlier years, Dot was employed by New Jersey Bell Telephone and later as a cashier for the Stop & Shop Supermarket. Throughout life Dorothy’s main interest was the love she shared in her home and with family. ![]() John Liddic, 74, Canton, was called to Heaven from his home while surrounded by loved ones early Wednesday August 29, 2018. John Edward was born August 8, 1944, in Williamsport, a son of the late John L. and Jane (Eyer) Liddic. He was a graduate of Williamsport High School. John enjoyed his career as a machinist; first with the former Schrader-Bellows Co. in Canton and later for Textron Lycoming until retirement. On June 28, 1985, he married the former Bartha deBruin in the Grover Church of Christ. John was a devoted family man who cherished his children and grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his amazing, heart-felt insights; if he had something to say, it was worth listening to. John also was blessed with a great sense of humor. His hobbies included many outdoor activities; hunting in the earlier years and later lots of fishing and camping. He enjoyed fishing tournaments in the NY Finger Lakes area and camping, especially at Clute Park near Watkins Glen where he made many friends. John was a member of the Grover Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ. In addition to Bartha, his beloved wife of 33 years, surviving are two daughters, Evonne Wilcox of Bradford County Manor and Natalie (Tim) Salsman of Laceyville; grandchildren, Samantha, Trena and Macey; two brothers-in-law, several sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends; also his faithful companion, "Brit-Brit" his dog. |
