Margaret “Doreen” (Redmond) Blair, 87, of Troy, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Wednesday evening, October 7, 2015. Doreen, as she was lovingly known by her family and friends was born on August 18, 1928 in England, a daughter of the late Arthur and Ethel (Connor) Redmond. She treasured her family, enjoyed needle craft arts, doll making, miniatures, reading, crossword puzzles.
Charles Bates, 53, of Solomons, Md., died suddenly on Sept. 24, 2015 while in Belize.
Chuck was in the country temporarily helping to manage a friend's restaurant. It brings great solace to family and friends that he passed away near the ocean he loved while helping a friend. He was in "paradise." Helping friends and family and putting others before himself will be his lasting legacy. He was selfless nearly to a fault. Chuck was born June 19, 1962 in Penn Yan, NY to the late Charles Bates Sr. and Patricia (Bailey) Bates. Soon, the family moved to Troy, where all four children were raised. Chuck graduated from Troy Area High School in 1980. Chuck was a gifted athlete in many sports, especially baseball. He was an all-star catcher for the Troy Trojans for all four years at Troy. After high school, Chuck moved to the Pocono Mountain area of Stroudsburg, Pa. He began his career in restaurant management there. He loved the area and made many lasting friendships. In later years, Chuck hosted several reunions in the Poconos for family and friends. Those were the moments he most treasured. ![]() Tyler Richard Brown, 27, of Troy, PA passed away unexpectantly on Sunday, August 23, 2015 at his home. Tyler was born on March 29, 1988 in Elmira, NY, son of Darl R. and Nancy L. (Hoagland) Brown of Troy, PA. He was a 2007 graduate of Troy High School where he was a varsity wrestler and football player. Tyler was currently employed by his uncle at Don’s Siding and Windows in Canton, PA. He was a past member of the Sylvania Presbyterian Church and was currently attending Fellowship Bible Church in Troy. Tyler enjoyed playing any kind of sport, hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles, and spending time with his family and friends. The family of Amy Place Barnes is saddened by her passing on Tuesday, July 14, 2015.
Amy will live on in our hearts and be remembered for her many talents, accomplishments and friendships amassed over her lifetime. Amy-Mom was born Amy Elizabeth Place on Dec. 28, 1919, in South Towanda in the 21 room - brick building next to the railroad tracks -- no longer there as of several years ago. Raised in Monroeton with seven brothers and sisters, she attended grade school at Monroeton, attended Towanda High School, played clarinet in the Towanda High School Band, and was selected to play in the Pennsylvania All State Band in Coatsville. Amy went to Miss Cranmers for piano lessons, walking from her child hood home on Mechanic St. at the bottom of the Burlington Turnpike, along the railroad track, having her lesson before school started. She used her musical abilities to play the piano and organ for the Monroeton Presbyterian Church and the Towanda Presbyterian Sunday School Services. Amy lived with her family in the Towanda jail on Pine St. during the time her father, Fred W. Place, was the Deputy Sheriff. Her mother, Daisy E. Place, was tip staff at the courthouse, and Amy assisted with court house cleaning duties. Vivienne M. Bumpus, 85, Holiday, FL passed away on July 11, 2015.
Born in Ralston, PA,on December 26, 1929, she was the daughter of Howard and Lottie Hertel. Vivienne graduated from Ralston High School in 1947. She went to cosmetology school and was a waitress for many years in the area at the White Tavern in Alba and Hickok's in Canton. She married Charles A. Bumpus in 1988. Vivienne enjoyed daily walks with her devoted companion "Shadow" and was a wonderful cook. Surviving are daughter, Susan Jennings; grandchildren, Brenda Davis and Brad Jennings; great grandchildren, Alex Davis, Elizabeth Davis, and Raymond Jennings; brothers, Jack, Williamsport, Ted, Elmira, NY, and David Hertel, Canton, PA. Predeceasing Mrs. Bumpus were her parents, husband, Charles, twin brother Richard Hertel of Canton and sister Frances Bennett. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SPCA or Suncoast Hospice, Florida. ![]() Thomas Edward Brann, previously of Canton, passed away in Wesley Chapel, FL on June 23, 2015 following a prolonged illness. Born February 9, 1946, he was the son of the late Wilson and Mary Wynne Brann, lifelong Canton residents. After graduating from Bloomsburg State University, he served in the Peace Corps in Guatemala. Shirley L. Beach, 84, o Laporte, PA passed away June 21, 2015 at the Highlands Care Center. Shirley was born October 27, 1930 daughter of the late Merritt and Sadie Belle (Breese) Gerould. She was a homemaker and enjoyed the time she spent with her family and friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Shirley’s interests included bowling, playing cards, jigsaw puzzles and camping.
At Shirley’s request graveside services will be private in the Union Cemetery, East Smithfield, PA. The Gerald W. Vickery Funeral Home, Troy, PA have been entrusted with arrangements. ![]() Wellman F. Brown, Age 86, of Smithfield Township, PA passed away at home on Friday, June 5, 2015. He was the loving husband of Gloria May (Garrison) Brown. The couple married July 16, 1950 and had 64 happy years together. Wellman was born on September 27, 1928 in East Smithfield, PA, son of the late Francis and Theresa (Bailey) Brown. He was an SRU High School graduate and soon after went to work for National Homes. Once he had saved up enough money, Wellman bought his farm and farming became his passion. In his later years Wellman became owner of Brown’s Attic where he was an antiques and collectables dealer. He enjoyed peddling his wares at local flea markets and sales. Wellman had the “gift of gab” and enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and customers. He was also an avid reader and a collector of many first edition books and was a member of The Bradford County Old Timers Association as well as several others. ![]() Charles Boinske, 98, lifelong resident of Blossburg, PA passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the Troy Community Hospital. Born April 10, 1917 in Blossburg, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Schultz) Boinske. Chas attended Blossburg School until age 14 when he went to work in his father’s coalmines. He then went to work at Blossburg’s Ward Foundry in 1934 before being inducted into the U.S. Army in 1945. On July 13, 1945, he married the former Crescence “Cret” Wallis at Camp Ellis, Illinois. They shared 63 wonderful years together before her passing on Nov. 30, 2008. Upon returning from the Army, Chas continued his work at the foundry as a molder and later as general foreman until retiring in 1982. He also worked as a night Policeman for the borough in the 1950’s, was a member of the town’s first zoning board and helped finalize Blossburg’s first TV cable service. ![]() Eloise Bagley, 91, Canton, PA peacefully passed away on May 14, 2015 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA Harriet Eloise Thomas Bagley was born October 12, 1923 in Leolyn, PA, a daughter of the late Bion and Mae (Griffin) Thomas. Eloise graduated from Canton High School, class of 1941. She attended North Union Church in Canton and was an avid bowler at Canton, Mansfield and Terrace Lanes in Troy. Eloise enjoyed time shared with her family, bird watching, working outdoors, hunting and fishing. Throughout her life, she worked beside her husband Carlyle in all of his endeavors. |
