Lester was born on May 11, 1927 in Gillett, son of the late Cola and Mae (Wright) Maynard.
Lester was also predeceased by his wife, Bertha, in 2012.
Lester retired as a truck driver for Cargill in Big Flats, NY.
Lester C. Maynard, 89, Gillett, passed away Monday, Feb. 20, 2017 at the Towanda Memorial Skilled Nursing facility.
Lester was born on May 11, 1927 in Gillett, son of the late Cola and Mae (Wright) Maynard. Lester was also predeceased by his wife, Bertha, in 2012. Lester retired as a truck driver for Cargill in Big Flats, NY. William James Most, 73, Gillette, NJ passed away peacefully on January 28th, 2017.
Born and raised in rural Canton, Pennsylvania, Bill became an Eagle Scout, and was an avid basketball and football player. After graduating from Canton High School, Bill attended Princeton University, where he received his bachelors and PhD in Aeronautical Engineering. After graduating, he worked as an engineer for United Technologies in Hartford, CT. In 1973 he took a job with Exxon Research and Engineering in Linden, NJ retiring in 1998. Upon retirement Bill and some of his colleagues formed their own company, Fuel Technology Associates.
On the afternoon of Thursday, January 19th, 2017, Jack Ward McNett of Canton passed away quietly at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was 90 years of age.
Born October 3rd, 1926 in Leolyn, Tioga Co. PA, he was the eldest son of Woods Garth McNett and Marion (Ward) McNett. Jack grew up in Leolyn and attended the English Hill School, Roaring Branch School and Canton High School. In October of 1944, while a senior in high school, Jack was drafted into the Army. As an avid photographer, Jack took yearbook pictures for his class prior to starting basic training in Alabama. Jack was able to join his graduating class while on leave in May of 1945. After training his unit was sent to Okinawa via Hawaii. While in Okinawa the war concluded and he went on to Japan as part of the occupation forces, returning home as a Master Sergeant. The Army had trained him as a radar technician which led to a lifelong interest in radio and television electronics. Upon returning home from the Army in 1946 Jack worked at various odd jobs before starting a 41-year career at the former Swayze Folding Box Company. On January 19th, 1949 he married Eleanor Monroe of Granville Summit. The wedding took place at the Methodist parsonage in Ralston. Jack and Eleanor settled in Canton where they raised their three sons. While working at Swayze’s Jack found time to pursue his interest in photography, electronics, hunting and shooting. For many years Jack was well known for his expertise in radio and television repairs throughout the greater Canton area. Dawn B. Miller, 77, of Troy, passed away Monday, January 9, 2017 at the Sayre Healthcare Center. Born April 12, 1939 in Canton, Dawn was the only daughter of the late Marletta (Rhodes) and James Ardell Bassett. She graduated from Canton High School with the class of 1957. Dawn enjoyed her work as a caregiver for the elderly and at Martha Lloyd Community Services in Troy. An outgoing strong-willed person, Dawn told it as she saw it and usually got what she wanted. She also often was a person to give help to someone in need. Dawn loved children. She was an avid horsewoman from an early age and cared about the welfare of all animals. Surviving are her four children; Leslie (Bill) Ellsworth of Troy, Kevin (Brenda) Hicks of Columbia Cross Roads, William (Treena) Miller of Durell and Michael (Candyce) Hicks of Oneonta, AL, 11 grandchildren; Robert and Gerald Hicks, John W. Dowling, Cynthia Collins, Sadie and Brooke Miller, Kevin “J.R.”, Sheena and Angela Hicks, Lisa and Kahleen Hicks, Bruce McMurray, 76, Granville Summit, PA and formerly of Phoenix, AZ passed away at home very unexpectedly on Monday morning, December 12, 2016. Born in Canton, PA, Bruce Andrew was a son of the late Percy Andrew and Neva Lou (Shedden) McMurray. He graduated from Troy High School in 1957. Bruce was employed as a heavy equipment and diesel mechanic until retiring in 2005. Later Bruce and his wife, the former Karen Moffat, relocated to the Windfall area. He was a member of the Canton Moose Lodge No. 429, a social member of the Canton V.F.W. Post 714 and was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers of Phoenix, AZ. Bruce was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed times shared with family and friends. Favorite hobbies included hunting, fishing and planting trees. He also attended many tractor pulls and stockcar races. Surviving is his wife Karen; children: Travis McMurray, Lori Stegemann and Janis Proffitt all of Phoenix and Brenda Fly, Houston, TX; mother-in-law, Phyllis Moffat, Elmira, NY; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; brothers; Cliff McMurray, Canton and Gene McMurray, Granville Summit; aunt and uncle; Norma Shedden, Troy and Leon Shedden, Granville Summit; many, a sister-in-law, Jo (Dennis) Carlson, Justin, TX, special nieces, nephews and cousins. Vera B. Mahar, Millerton, PA passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, November 28, 2016 at the age of 90. She was born on July 29, 1926 in Laquin, PA, a daughter of the late Clyde Rutty and Mae Case. Vera is predeceased by her husbands, David R. Austin and Ralph C. Mahar; sons, Dennis H. Austin, and William ‘Bill” R. Austin; brothers, Rocky, Danny, Emmy and sister, Marcella. She is survived by children, Gerald L. Austin, Sharon A. Smith, Vernon “Butch” (Shirley) Austin, Charlene M. (John) Ketter; grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sisters, Rosie Packard, Beverly Allen, Lucy Sullivan and Jane (Ed) Moore; and many extended family members. Darwin A. Mickley, age 39, of Elmira, passed very unexpectedly due to a heart attack on Sun. Nov. 20, 2016.
He was born on April 28, 1977 in Troy, the son of Glenn and Michelle Salle Mickley, Gillett. In addition to his parents, "Mick" is survived by his loving wife and companion of the last seven years, Rebecca Reichard Mickley; two sons, Maxwell and Fallon; Darwin's siblings, Renae (Tom) Arnold, Pink Hill, Mis., and Darryn (Melissa) Mickley, Elmira; father-in-law and mother-in-law, David (Susan) Reichard, Columbia Cross Roads; sisters-in-law, Jennifer (Brian) Starks, Bethlehem, PA, and Sarah (Mitchell) MacDougall, St. Michaels, MD; brother-in-law, David (Andrea) Reichard, Wilkes-Barre; along with nieces, nephews, many friends and colleagues. Rosanne A. Morgan, 88, Canton, died peacefully at her home on November 9, 2016. She was born August 8, 1928 to John and Olive (Boughton) Faulkner. She attended Canton area schools and graduated from Canton High School as a member of the Class of 1946. She had a great love of music, and proudly played the bass drum in the high school marching band. On September 18, 1946, Rosanne married Roland E. Morgan. They shared 47 years of married life until his passing in 1994. They raised four children and founded and operated the Pam-Lee Motel & Restaurant for many years. Rosanne was a fabulous cook and baker. She loved travel, golf, reading and Penn State football. Rosanne worked as a secretary for the Canton Area School District for 33 years, with most of those years spent as secretary to the high school guidance counselor. She was “Mom Morgan” to hundreds of students during those years- giving hugs, drying tears, buying lunches and giving advice. She was a positive influence in so many lives. In her later years health issues kept her mostly home bound. However, she had a steady circle of friends from the high school and community who visited her regularly and kept her informed of the goings on in the area. She treasured these visits because they meant that people hadn’t forgotten her. On the afternoon of Sunday, September 4th,2016, Durland L. Mosher, Sr. passed away quietly at his residence in Columbia Cross Roads surrounded by his beloved family. He was 68 years of age. Born June 14th, 1948 in Troy, he was the son of William D. and Betty L. (Bailey) Mosher. Known to all as “Skip,” he was a man of imposing countenance with a heart of gold. Skip was well acquainted with rigorous labor, having worked several years in construction with S.E. Williams Co. of Canton. Eventually he became an over the road trucker, owning and operating his own rig. During the 1970’s when C.B. radios were popular Skip was a member of the Happy Handles C.B. Club, and was well known over the air waves as “Legal Skip.” He was a life member of the Canton Fire Department as well. Skip enjoyed hunting, country music and participating in local tractor pulls. With his warm smile, friendly handshake and easy going demeanor, Skip formed instant, but lifelong, friendships with just about everyone he met. |
