At the March17 meeting of the Troy School Board, the following reports were given:
Northern Tier Career Center – John Morgan announced the spring open house on May 13 and the Center is still having problems with roofing issues. Federal Programs – Steve Brion noted that the district received the final allocation for Title I, $361,974. Dan Martin reported that the Intermediate Unit is working on many new programs. Bill Brasington noted that the PA School Boards Association is going to hold a teleconference the first week in March about the governor's budge. Primary School Report – Steve Brion said that Movie Night is this Friday and reminded everyone about Kindergarten registration. The minutes of the December meeting were approved. Mr. Wilcox announced that the Board Committees and chairmen will be unchanged from last year. The representatives to the NTCC, BLaST and PSBA also are unchanged. The Canton Area Education Association (CAEA) and the Canton Area School District both voted to ratify a successor agreement to their current contract.
The current agreement is scheduled to expire, June 30, 2015 The new agreement will expire on June 30, 2018 and will include salary increases of 2.5% each year. The board nominated Mr. Wilcox as temporary president to conduct the election of president and vice-president for the coming year. After Mr. Wilcox was nominated as president and the nomination seconded, Mr. Sourbeer said he would nominate Mrs. Sourbeer, who remarked, "I do not want to cause hard feelings, but you [Mr. Wilcox] told me you did not want to [be President] again." Mr. Wilcox responded, "I have served three years and felt it was time for someone else to take the responsibility. If [the board wants] me to serve, I will do it if you give me your support." At a recently held Troy School Board meeting, board member Rebecca Nauta what to explain the new policy on birthday celebrations which are held in the district. Due to the concerns of food allergies, the issue of overweight, and new state and federal regulations, all food which is brought into the district must be wrapped and have a list of ingredients on the item's wrapper. "Birthday celebrations will still be allowed, but no homemade items can be brought into the schools," said Mrs. Nauta. Mrs. Nauta wanted to make sure parents and guardians in the district were aware of the new policy and to assure residents that birthdays can and will be celebrated. Happy birthday to all!!
