Once, before going into battle, Alexander the Great began making elaborate preparations for a large military operation. “Everything,” said Alexander, “but hope.” Overwhelmed with sickness and facing death, David cried out, “My hope is in You! Save me from all my transgressions!” He realized that in spite of his vast wealth and power he was bankrupt and powerless over his life. He could do nothing to save himself.
Troy TOPS #986 met July 20 at the Troy Vets Club with fourteen members weighing in. There was a total loss of 10 3/4 pounds. Best TOPS loser was Jim with a 2 3/4 pound loss; Julia was best loser for KOPS.
The fruit basket was shared by Jim B. and Julia. This is Your Week winner was Claudette. Runner up was Barb with a 2 1/2 pound loss. There was one turtle. Heritage Garden Club members met on July 13 at Alparon Park for a combined business meeting and work bee in two of the gardens that they maintain at the park. It was a beautiful summer evening and before getting down to work they enjoyed a picnic and each other’s company. Fair week is fast approaching and they all wanted to make sure the gardens were looking their best.
Guthrie Troy Community Hospital’s Auxiliary is pleased to announce the 2015 recipients of their medical scholarships. Troy High School graduate Marisa Jarrell and Canton High School graduate Kayla Shay were recently awarded the scholarships during their respective schools’ awards ceremonies.
The Guthrie Troy Community Hospital Auxiliary Medical Scholarship is a $500 award for Canton and Troy area high school seniors planning on pursuing a course of study in the medical field. Each applicant had to write a 500-word essay outlining her reasons for choosing their particular medical field of study. They also had to submit two letters of recommendation and had to be in the top third of their graduating class. ![]() On July 18, a bus load of people enjoyed a free guided public tour of the Tioga State Forest, focusing on the Armenia Mountain tract east of Blossburg. Topics included history of the Armenia Mountain Tract, oil and gas well exploration, acid mine drainage and abatement, recreational facilities, sustainable forest management and wildlife habitat enhancement. The group enjoyed lunch at Lamb's Lookout (shown above). Transportation, lunch, and water were provided. The Canton Area Recreation Association received $218.40 on July 10 for recycled aluminum cans from Staiman Recycling in Williamsport. Many of the cans were collected from the Canton American Legion Post #303 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #714, and many other members of the community also turned in cans. The cans were stored by Ken & Karen Robertson and were transported to Williamsport by Frank Jennings of Jennings Coal. The Rec. Association is very appreciative of the generous community spirit shown by everyone who contributes to the can project in any way. A $743,000 culvert replacement project on Route 414 near the intersection of Jennings Road (T-318) in Leroy Township, Bradford County, is scheduled to start on Monday, July 27.
