The Bradford County Historical Society is pleased to have recently received a child’s miniature Spatterware tea set that belonged to Bertha L. Bailey, formerly of Towanda.
Born in Lynn, PA, in 1894, Bertha was the daughter of Harry and Clara Conrad Luce. She married William Bailey. After her husband’s death, Bertha provided for her family by operating the Antiquarian Restaurant in Tunkhannock at which time she acquired the tea set.
Identified as blue Spatterware in the Castle pattern, the tea set dates between 1800 and 1830. The eleven-piece set includes 4 cups and saucers, a teapot, creamer, and sugar bowl. A complete set of miniature Spatterware is very scarce, making this a wonderful addition to the Historical Society collection.
In 1946, Bertha Bailey purchased a house on York Avenue in Towanda and named it the Victorian Guest House, offering rooms at 50 cents per night.
The child’s tea set was donated by Barbara Mower, daughter of Bertha Bailey. The Bradford County Historical Society appreciates this fine contribution and encourages others to consider the Historical Society when looking for a home for their family heirlooms.
