October was a month of great activity on our ancestors’ farms as farm families worked to put in the winter’s supply of food for themselves and their animals. Harvesting and preserving the crops for use during the months to come was hard work; however, our ancestors found a way to have fun while working. One way was for neighbors and friends to gather for an “Apple Butter Stir”. This allowed the folk to have an enjoyable time while doing the task of preserving the apples.

What do we need to do to receive blessings from God?
Are they automatic? Do we have to be in the right place at the right time? Sit quietly and meditate? Think positive thoughts and pray for wealth without working? Is there something we can do? We would all have to agree that Gods blessings are not equally distributed nor given automatically as some would expect. In fact Psalm 41 begins with an insightful statement: Blessed is the person who has compassion for the poor or weak and does something about it. God cares for the weak and the poor and the oppressed and is delighted when we do something on their behalf. In fact, David says that those who show Gods compassion will be delivered when they are experiencing the difficulties of life. But there is more. First White Man to Visit PA Brule's Coming into Bradford Co. 400 Years Ago to Be Commemorated10/8/2015
The Bradford County Historical Society at their annual meeting on October 25, 2015 will commemorate the 400th anniversary of Stephen Brule’s visit to Carantouan (Spanish Hill).
In September, 1615, Stephen Brule, (pronounced Brulay), who was Champlain’s interpreter among the Indians, traveled on a mission, from the Niagara River in a southeasterly direction across the western counties of the state of New York, and arrived at an Indian palisaded town, called by him Carantouan. This Indian town has been identified as having been located at what is called Spanish Hill in South Waverly, PA. This visit and stay of Stephen Brule, to these parts, is without doubt the first white man to visit and traverse the western portion of the state of New York, as well as the first to enter the present limits of Pennsylvania. The Guthrie First Impressions Birthing Center at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital will be hosting its 1st annual Remembrance Walk. The walk will take place, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. and will leave from the Guthrie Clinic Atrium in Sayre.
The event is free and open to individuals and families who have experienced the loss of a child during pregnancy or shortly after birth. |
