History books remember the tragedy of the Lusitania as the event that sparked U.S. involvement in World War I. Though the sinking of the British ocean liner happened two years before we entered the war, the event played a pivotal role in swaying public opinion against Germany. This year, May 7th marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania To commemorate this event, local history-enthusiast David Fortune will be presenting "A Tale of Two Ships" at the Spalding Memorial Library in Athens on May 7th at 6:30 p.m.
"Marcel Singer: The Gentle Butcher of Hong Kew" will be presented at the Bradford County Library by Library Director Jeffrey R. Singer on Thursday, May 7, at 7:00 p.m.
Mr. Singer will discuss the biography of his late father, a Holocaust survivor who spent 11 years in Shanghai, China, during World War II. His family not only survived the Holocaust, but thrived and found success in spite of the direst of circumstances. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please call the Library, at 570-297-2436. The Bradford County Library is located on Route 6, one mile west of Burlington. Camping, cooking, hot dogs, and enjoying the scenery were the members of Trail Life Troop in the area.
The 2015 Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. (BTHS) Annual Meeting was held on April 13th at the First United Methodist Church, Mansfield who donated its space for Policy Council, Annual BTHS, Inc. meeting, and the regular monthly BTHS, Inc. Board meeting.

The 64th annual observance of the National Day of Prayer will take place on Thursday, May 7th, and be observed locally on the steps of the Bradford County Courthouse in Towanda at noon. This year’s theme, “Lord, Hear Our Cry,” is based on the scripture in I Kings 8:28 - “Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day.” In honor of the event, the County Commissioners will be issuing a Proclamation, designating May 7th as a Day of Prayer in Bradford County.
This notice is for a Disaster Recovery Housing grant application now being developed for housing needs resulting from damage to homes during the flooding events in 2011 including repetitive losses from prior flooding. If your home was damaged during flood events in 2011 and before and all the repairs needed are not yet complete please contact me by phone or email. The application can include homes whose family income is above or equal to the low to moderate income levels usually allowed.
