Journalist and novelist Michael J. Fitzgerald will be speaking on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Bradford County Library in Troy,offering comments on his two published novels, The Fracking War (Mill City Press, 2014) and Fracking Justice (Mill City Press, 2015).
The title of his talk will be: “Fracking Fiction: You Can’t Make This Stuff Up.” The Bradford Co. Republican Committee is sponsoring its 4th annual essay contest open to all Bradford Co students in grades 4 through 12. The topic is "How Would You Define An American Hero?" Essays will be grouped into three divisions: grades 4, 5, and 6; grades 7, 8, and 9; and grades 10, 11, and 12. Winners in each division will be awarded a plaque and a $50 cash prize. Second place winners will each receive certificates and a $25 cash prize. The Wells-Jackson Lions Club is sponsoring a chicken-and-biscuits benefit dinner on Friday, October 9, 2015, from 5-7 p.m. at the Millerton Wesleyan Church, 5174 Main Street, Millerton, PA. This dinner is for the benefit of 13-year-old Trai Deats whose family is in need of financial assistance with his medical bills. The cost of $8.00 and $7.50 for children and seniors includes beverage and dessert. The dinner is open to the public. Eat in or take out. Come and meet Molly, a Future Leader Dog puppy, who is in training and needs your help in becoming socialized for her future in helping a blind person.” Back by popular demand, the 2016 Bradford-Sullivan Counties Outstanding Young Woman Program will be facilitating the “People’s Choice Award” activity. This award is primarily a “fun” fundraiser which benefits the Local Scholarship Fund. The winner’s picture will be posted on the “People’s Choice Award Board” in the auditorium lobby at the conclusion of the program. It will not be announced on stage, as it is not part of the actual program.
A feral cat was under a car on Dietz Road, Wilmot Township, Bradford County. The owner went to get inside the car and the cat jumped out from under the car and bit her on the leg and arm. The owner’s daughter got bit on the arm while attempting to help her mother. The cat tested positive for rabies at the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory in Harrisburg. There are no confirmed cases of domestic animals that were exposed to the cat. Two people are receiving rabies prophylaxis. Pennsylvania law requires all dogs and non-feral cats to be vaccinated against rabies within 4 weeks after the date the dog or cat attains 12 weeks of age. Unless otherwise indicated by the directions of the vaccine manufacturer a booster vaccination shall be administered between 12 and 14 months from the date of the initial vaccination. The animal shall then be subsequently revaccinated on an ongoing basis in accordance with the directions of the vaccine manufacturer. Click on “protect,” “animal diagnostic services” and then “rabies.” The Guthrie post-concussion support group for athletes and their families will hold its next meeting, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. in the 4 Blue Conference Room located on the fourth floor of the Guthrie Medical Group in Sayre. The meeting is free and open to the public.
This month’s guest speaker is Jeffery Pelachick. While playing football in high school, he sustained multiple concussions. Now majoring in Secondary Education at Mansfield University, Pelachick will talk about his injuries, and what it is like being a survivor of numerous concussions. ![]() The Alpha Zeta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma recently donated over 300 baby books to the Robert Packer Hospital. The books are distributed in the First Impressions Birthing Center to each new mother and infant. It is hoped that this community partnership will encourage parents to read to their children and develop a love of reading that will start at a very young age. The chapter members fund this Baby Book Literacy Project by holding a basket raffle each year with the proceeds used for the purchase of books. This is the 17th year for the project. Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is a professional honorary society of women educators. The society promotes professional and personal growth of its members and excellence in education. The local Alpha Zeta chapter is comprised of educators from Athens, Canton, Northeast Bradford, Sayre, Towanda, Troy, and Sullivan County school districts. ![]() The Bradford County Library will show a documentary film "Irena Sendler: In the Name of Their Mothers", Thursday, September 24, at 7:00 p.m. When 29-year-old social worker Irena Sendler saw the suffering of Warsaw's Jews, she reached out to her most trusted colleagues for help. Together, they rescued over 2,500 Jewish children by forging identification papers and placing them in Catholic safe houses and orphanages in Warsaw and the Polish countryside. In her late 90s when interviewed for this film, Irena Sendler's straightforward account of her life is both humbling and inspiring. She recalls her incarceration in a Gestapo prison, and her continued harassment by authorities in post-war Communist Poland. This film expertly captures the will and character of the women of the resistance against the backdrop of occupied Poland. The Bradford Co Historical Society host a program titled "Preserving Bradford County: Local Historians and the Books and Museums they Developed" scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. There is no admission charge for this event but donations are appreciated. Learn about these historians and the work they did to preserve our heritage so it would be available for present generations. The Bradford/Sullivan AARP Chapter #4423 met Tuesday, September 8th at 1:30 p.m. at the Wysox EMS Building. President Tom House opened the meeting with the flag salute followed by George Smith offering a prayer.
President House welcomed guest Sue Wheeler to the meeting. She and her husband Joe Wheeler traveled to Korah, Ethiopia on a mission trip in 2014. The area of Korah has a population of around 350,000 people who have been neglected by the government. The families live off the takings of a large dump. |
