President Bill Hector welcomed each member and guest. After a delicious meal served by Darlene Maynard and staff, President Bill introduced the speaker, Lynn Herman, Lobbyist for PARSE.
He explained in detail how a lobbyist works and they must become familiar with the legislators and members of the Senate. He spoke how he familiarizes himself with the Bills that are being introduced and if they are of concern to the benefit of the retirees, he works to get them passed or rejected.
Mr. Herman spoke regarding the retirees health benefits and he does all he can do to protect these. He also spoke how the pension system works and the reason for no COLA was the reduction in the Pension Fund due to low interest rates and the decline in the Stock Market.
President Bill gave a report on the Northeast Regional Meeting. He reported that the State PARSE Office had appointed a committee to work on new By Laws. If the new By Laws are passed, They will give more power to the members, not the State Officers. Also they are working on a clause that would give help to a survivor in case the beneficiary dies, so they will continue to have health benefits.
It was announced that the next PARSE meeting will be held Tuesday, June 9 at the Veterans Club in Elk Lake. Follow 706 to Rush, take Rt. 3023 to flashing traffic signal and turn left.
