CANTON — The Canton Area Chamber of Commerce met at the building on Main Street at noon on Thursday, Oct. 7.
For United Way, Reese discussed the 211 program, which is the United Way referral line. She noted that they receive roughly 100 calls a month in Bradford County. United Way is planning its kickoff for 2022. Last year, they raised $560,00. This year, the goal is the same.
Dr. Briggs spoke about an upcoming event taking place at the school and he invited chamber members to participate. The event is called SOLE Slam, with SOLE standing for Self-Organized Learning Environment. Community partners and students will collaborate at the event and answer important questions on job seeking.
For this particular event, they will work together to answer the “big question:” “What skills, experiences, and information you need to become more aware of opportunities that exist in your community after you graduate?”
Students will investigate and present their findings, as community partners will offer information from the field. This experience will also provide an opportunity for student reflection and evidence for a Career Ready PA artifact. This event will take place on Friday, Nov. 5, at the high school from noon to 2 p.m. To become a community partner in this event, contact Dana Vermilya at [email protected].
The annual guide is also taking events for next year. The events do not need to be detailed. They need to be submitted within a couple of weeks.
The Rialto Theatre will host Gabe Stillman, a Gibson Award Recipient whose hometown is in Williamsport. The event will take place at the Rialto Theatre at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5. Tickets will go on sale on Monday, Oct. 11.
Next on the agenda was the reflection on this year’s motorcycle ride, with Frank Watson discussing the event that took place the last weekend in September. Watson noted that there were 81 riders signed up this year. He is seeking to make next year’s event an AMA event, and plans to schedule the event the same weekend as the Pumpkin Festival, which is the first weekend in October. This is planned to hopefully get more people not only browsing around at the festival, but sign more riders up for the adventure ride. This year’s event he said raised roughly $2,400 for local charities.
Eric Schoonover noted that for the Halloween parade, costume judges are needed. Please contact him for more information or to sign up. The Halloween parade will be Saturday, Oct. 30, at 5 p.m.
As of currently, there are no set plans for Light Night or Small Business Saturday. Those items will be discussed further at next month’s meeting. The Christmas raffle will be dependent on what the plans are for those events.
The next Canton Chamber of Commerce meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 4.
