Hostess Mary Alice presented an educational program on Milkweed Treasures. She provided dried milkweed seed pod shells, paint, glitter and glue in which everyone was instructed how to make decorative bird ornaments from seed pods.
After the birds were made, President Barb Andrus called the business meeting to order with a pledge of allegiance to the flag. There were 8 members present.
in which according to the by-laws, they state a quorum of 9 need to be present in order to vote on any matters. Barb thanked Mary Alice for hosting the August meeting and giving the program. The minutes were reviewed with one clarification made there is no charge to our guests coming to the 20th Anniversary celebration.
Our GFCP (Garden Federation Club of Pennsylvania) President, Sharon Brown reported on the Leadership Workshop in Camp Hill on July 27th. She is one of the program speakers and she will have one more Leadership Workshop in Butler, PA. on August 19th. One of the main topics given by Cindy Horshay explained about the Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance requirements. The Pennsylvania Govenor has waived the $10.00 fee for volunteers to get their clearance and will be effective on August 25th, 2015. President Barb attended the workshop on the 27th and after the workshop they visited a community garden in Camp Hill owned by the Ames Tool company with over 150 raised beds of different sizes. Barb pointed out this issue of the Keystone Gardener features GCFP President Sharon Brown on the cover.
This year’s 2015 yearbooks were passed out to all who hadn’t received one. Beverly Hunter suggested we get a Program Chairman for next year, but due to a lack of a quorum, this will have to be tabled until the next meeting. Barb gave thanks to everyone who helped get all the gardens ready for the Troy Fair. Also thanks to Cummings Lumber for donating mulch and to Steve Andrulonis and Bob Hunter for hauling a load of mulch. The Troy Fair floral exhibits exceeded those last year for a total of 529 in the Senior and Junior Divisions.

The plans for the upcoming 20th anniversary of the garden club are coming together nicely. We have 35 reservations so far. The annual District V meeting hosted by Mifflin County Garden club is coming up also on September 2nd in Lewistown and reservations are due by August 15th. We need to put together a basket worth $50.00 to $75.00 for the raffle on the Ways and Means table. Carol Ulmer will chair the plans for the Pennsylvania Heritage Festival on September 19-20th.
Barb plans to attend course IV Flower Show Judge School in Reading on October 13, 14, and 15th. She was invited to be student judge for the Montrose Garden club’s flower show “Kaleidoscope” on July 24th. She really enjoyed that and won 2 blue ribbons, 1 third place and 2 honorable mentions in the Horticulture Division.
The meeting was adjourned and the next meeting will be on September 14th at 7 P.M. at Liz Hart’s home. Flower Designs by Charlotte Lyon will be our presenter. Bring some flowers from your own garden to this! Then Mary Alice served a delicious cake refreshments. They all had a good time!
