For two consecutive Tuesdays, the Church of Christ hosted a Spaghetti Dinner at McCallum Manor and Cedar Ridge residents. Not only did they enjoy the dinner, but had an opportunity to learn more about the Gathered and Grown Garden.
With the direction of the Holy Spirit and the interest of individuals in Canton, they hope to expand their raised bed garden in the coming year.
The name Gathered and Grown comes with the idea that we are gathering people from all aspects of the community as we grow the garden and our relationships together. Realizing that people enjoy the ability to get their hands dirty in the soil, but may not have the space or ability to have their own gardens, the idea of a community garden came to mind.
The garden will continue to grow on the east lawn of the Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) property, located at the corner of E. Union St. and N. Minnequa Ave in Canton, Pennsylvania. Individuals, families or even groups are able to take part in the Gathered and Grown Garden in 2014 by registering for a 4x8 plot for $50 or a 4x16 plot for $100. This is a one time fee to go toward the purchase of supplies in creating the raised beds (i.e. lumber, soil, fertilizer, etc.)
Gardeners will be expected to provide their own seeds/plants and tend to their plots with the use of water provided by the Church of Christ. In addition, individuals are asked to participate in special community days where gardening can happen as a group activity.
If you are interested in participating in the garden or would like to have more information, call the Church Office: 570-673-5796 or Rev. Bonnie Browning: 570-250-3057.
