“Having grown up in Bradford County, preserving and protecting our local heritage and history mean a great deal to me, and that’s why I’m pleased to see that the state is providing grant funding to many of our smaller historical societies in rural areas,” Pickett said.
The funding, from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission’s Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program, was announced March 23.
“This funding will go a long way in helping the historical society continue its mission of preservation,” said Baker. “Although our state’s historical societies are often small operations with limited staff, they manage to accomplish a great deal and stay heavily involved in the communities they serve, which is why our recognition and support of them is so important.”
The grant program is designed to direct funding to strengthen Pennsylvania museums; provide general operating support to museums and official county historical societies; allow applicants to determine and describe how funds will be used; and achieve geographic balance in distribution.
The Bradford County Historical Society was founded in 1870 and records and preserves the county history through documents, publications, tapes, photographs, artifacts, models and samplings of natural resources. It also makes these available to the general public, and through its activities and programming, seeks to encourage of local residents in the county’s history.
