CANTON — The Canton War Memorial Pool opened up for the summer last week.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the pool will be operating a little differently this year. At this time, the pool will not be scheduling private swimming lessons.
Though masks are not required in the pool, they will be worn when entering the bathhouse/rest rooms, per
Center for Disease Control guidelines.
Social distancing guidelines will be in place and the pool will have to limit capacity to 50% for both in the pool and on the deck.
“We had to mark areas for social distancing and purchase additional sanitizing items. We also will be utilizing extra staff for sanitizing,” said Canton Borough secretary Amy Seeley. ”It didn’t slow us down on opening though. We opened June 8 last year.”
The borough has implemented a Plexiglas protection screen in the office and each person entering the pool area will be asked to have their temperature taken.
Each person will be asked if they have a fever or are feeling feverish, if they have a cough or shortness of breath or if they have come into contact with someone who has/had COVID-19. A temperature of 100.9 or over will result in the person being asked to leave. If someone becomes ill, they will be asked to leave and all guests will be asked to exit the pool for cleaning and water testing.
Deck areas around the pool are marked off for social distancing. Families are asked to pick an area and stay there unless going into the pool or bathroom. A walkway will be marked off and patrons are asked to follow the arrows.
Chairs will be available and sanitized. Canton Borough is not responsible for brought chairs or other items. Pool toys are not permitted at this time.
Only families that reside in Bradford County and/or Canton Area School District full time are permitted in the pool area and children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
Rest rooms and surfaces around the pool will be sanitized on a scheduled basis, but at least every hour. Rest rooms will be monitored and a number of people allowed will be limited.
Lifeguards will be permitted a swim so patrons will be asked to leave the pool for those short swims. Lifeguard equipment will be cleaned after each use.
“We ask that you all be patient with the changes we are required to implement. We are excited that we can be one of the public pools opening to serve our patrons. Thank you and we can’t wait to see you,” the Canton pool staff posts on their Facebook.
Hours of operation include Mondays through Fridays, noon to 7 p.m., Saturdays noon to 8 p.m. and Sundays noon to 5 p.m.
