CANTON — The Canton Borough Council met in the Canton Firemen’s Hall which encouraged citizens to sit further apart than normal to help socially distance. Minutes from the previous meeting were accepted and the meeting started off with the Council voting to adopt Ordinance No. 2020-597 to update a borough policy regarding fire insurance claims within the borough.
The council wished to remind constituents to fill out the 2020 Census. Canton is above the national average in response rate but lower than the state response rate. Borough Administrator Amy Seeley reminded everyone that every non-counted person could create a potential loss in federal money of up to $2,100 per person. The easiest way to fill out the census would be to utilize www.my2020census.gov. The Green Free Library has free-to-use computers and internet for any residents in need.
Police Chief Doug Seeley reported that the department had come to a Memorandum of Understanding with the Canton School District as they do every 2 years.
The Green Free Library is offering a Summer Learning Program for children on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-1pm starting June 16th and running to July 16th. The learning programs are all virtual. Potential visitors are reminded that masks are still required in the library and the annual book sale has been cancelled due to COVID risks.
The Shade Tree Commission was awarded Tree City USA Status for 2019.
Finally, the Rialto theater will be hosting its first Drive in Movie this Friday, June 19th at sundown. The movie shown will be Steven Spielberg classic E.T. The showing will be held at the Manley Bohlayer farm in East Canton. Admittance is $20 per car and viewers are encouraged to grab some popcorn and candy at the theater beforehand, drinks will be sold at the farm.
