The first of three presidential debates wrapped up last week and it didn’t disappoint.
It was as fiery and mismanaged as I had imagined.
The candidates came in and did not pull any punches.
Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace moderated the debate and opened up with a question about the Supreme Court.
President Donald Trump used his first two minutes to explain why he thought he had the right to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg in an election year. Trump stated that he is elected for four years and not just three.
Democratic candidate Joe Biden retorted saying that the people need to be given a chance to let their voice be heard through the 2020 election. President Trump responded by saying that the people have spoken through the 2016 election.
The fireworks didn’t stop there.
Chris Wallace moved the topic to Corona virus and how each candidate thought they could stop the virus and prevent more lives from being lost.
This is where the debate spiraled out of control.
Both candidates took shots at each other over closing down the economy and how we can rebound and get back to where we were.
Biden lashed out at the President for his response to wearing masks and social distancing. Trump responded saying more people would have died had he not taken action in response to the china virus.
This is where Chris Wallace stepped into the picture as the debates third contestant.
The topics from here on often changed quickly.
President Trump would make points. Biden would interject, fumble over some words after the President interrupted him and then Wallace would change the subject.
What can we expect from the next debate that is scheduled to take place?
A more prepared Biden. There were times where the Vice President seemed to get off topic and lost his train of thought. I think his campaign team will adjust next time.
For the President, the best thing he can do is let Biden speak. There were times where he had himself backed into a corner and Trump bailed him out by interrupting and Wallace would follow by changing the topic.
The second debate is a town hall. Both candidates will be able to walk around freely which could pose some challenges.
Hopefully we don’t get an all out fist fight although I know some would really enjoy that.
