The read-alikes which were discussed earlier this year were ‘The Postmistress’ by Sarah Blake, historical fiction set on an island off the coast of Maine and in war-torn London and ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’ by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. The latter title was 11 weeks on the NYT Best Seller list in 2009. The Literary Society was a book club which fronted for resistance activities against the Nazis in WWII on the island of Guernsey off the English coast. What all three novels share in addition to the time period are the themes of loyalty, courage, and standing strong in the face of danger.
