July 2015 Free Children’s Art and Music Workshops
July 7th: Bookmaking Basics
A book made by hand is the perfect meeting place for artistic expression and emerging literacy. Bookmaking unlocks something amazing in kids—creativity, enthusiasm, a zest for learning, concentration, patience, imagination and lots of talent. It lets each of us forge a personal connection to our art, to reading and to writing. Making books by hand gives kids a chance to be authors and illustrators, editors and designers, to completely invest themselves in their work.
Instructor: Mrs. Amy Miller is currently teaching at Troy Area Jr./Sr. High School where she offers a variety of classes to grades 10-12 (including Ceramics, Jewelry, Drawing and Painting, Digital Art) and general art. Having graduated from Mansfield University with both her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Art Education, she began teaching in Troy Area School District thirteen years ago. Her most recent works are centered around her two young children in the form of digital photography and large scale portraits in pencil. Mrs. Miller enjoys traveling, vegetarian cooking, and being an advocate for healthy living both for her High School students and her own family.
July 14th: Storytelling Through Music
How do movies use music? How can music enhance a story? Come and explore the role that music plays in storytelling and then create your own masterpiece. We will work together to write a story, illustrate it, compose music for it and perform it. Join us in the world of creativity!

July 21st: Musical Feelings
Have you ever thought of writing or drawing a story according to music? Do you enjoy dancing to a happy song? Within the hours of this workshop, we will be exploring our inner dancer and also becoming a famous author and illustrator!
We will be creating a story according to different styles of music and how the music makes us feel. We will be creating a booklet for you to write and illustrate your story! I can’t wait to hear the stories we come up with! After we focus on writing and drawing, it will be time to let our bodies take a break from working so hard. We are going to be exploring a few different dances that will allow our inner dancer to appear! It will be a fun and relaxing day so I hope you join us!
Instructor: Miss Lacy Young grew up in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania on a farm with her family. Growing up, she spent a lot of time outside. Miss Young graduated from Lock Haven University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Music. She was hired in 2014 as a kindergarten teacher in the Troy Area School District. She has also taught 5th grade Social Studies and 5th Grade Science. When entering her classroom, Miss Young’s students are often singing or dancing because it’s she and her student’s favorite way to learn!
July 28th: Rain Stick Sensory!
Around this time every year, people start begging for some rain. Whether it is to green up their browning yards, replenish their drooping crops, or simply to have a break from the stifling heat… a forecast that includes rain in late July typically has people jumping for joy. Rain Sticks make for a fun project for any age and they can be used either as a toy or a percussion instrument. Rain Sticks produce the soothing sounds of rain falling. Students who come to this workshop will construct a 3-dimensional form and fill it to make gentle, percussive sounds. No two Rain Sticks are the same and the decoration is unique to each artist.
Instructor: Miss Courtney Grieve is the Canton Elementary Art Teacher. She graduated with a B.S. in Art Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she also studied interior design. Through a study abroad program, she had the opportunity to travel to London, England. She holds a Master’s degree in Education from Wilkes University and is certified to teach English as a Second Language. Miss Grieve has had a passion for teaching and for art since high school when she participated in the adopt-a-class program for an elementary art class. She is thrilled to be part of a community that supports the arts!
