After an entertaining program, members of the club met at member Gail McMahon’s home. President Andrus opened the business meeting by leading the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. She thanked Gail McMahon for hosting the meeting.
The club has received many compliments on the tulip bed that is now in bloom in front of the Troy Boro Hall. The Troy Boy Scouts helped the garden club plant two hundred red tulips last fall. President Andrus said the flowers for the baskets downtown have been ordered. Members of the Interact Club have removed the basket liners and delivered them to Sharon Brown’s home. Plants will be ordered for the Blue Star Memorial located in West Burlington.
President Andrus asked for a moment of silence to remember Barb Eiffert who will be greatly missed by the club. Mary Alice Bower will select a flowering bush which will be planted in Barb’s memory at the “Welcome to Troy” sign which Barb so lovingly tended.
For the third year members of the club will participate in “1866 Farmer Boy days” in which the club will present a program on herbs to area school children with a focus on what herbs might have been grown in that era. The Bradford County Heritage Association which is sponsoring this event has recently presented the club with a certificate of appreciation for all their work at the Heritage Village herb garden and friendship garden.
Sharon Brown who is also a member of the Harrisburg Garden Club was recently installed as the new state president of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania at the organization’s annual convention which was held at Erie. Members of the club who attended this event included Barb Andrus, Charlotte Lyon and Judy Warn. Sharon’s husband Dr. Bill Brown also attended the ceremony which was held at the Sheraton Hotel and Convention Center. Sharon has held a number of positions on the state board as well as on the board of National Garden Clubs, Inc.
Heritage Garden Club received a first place award at the convention for best yearbook in the small club category and a second place award in the “Tras to Treasure” contest whose theme was “Lake Effects”. The club is very pleased to announce that Brooke Ostrander whom the club sponsored, received the Miriam A. Steele Scholarship award for $1000.00 which President Barb Andrus will present to her at the Troy High School Awards ceremony on May 18.
Ron Young gave a native plant walk for local Girl Scouts at Mt. Pisgah on Tuesday, May 5. The girls have now completed the requirements for their Native Plant Badge and were given their badges at the end of the walk by President Barb Andrus. Club members who also attended this event included Sharon Brown, Beverly Hunter and Judy Warn.
The State Board meeting of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania will be held on June 8 and 9 at the Atherton Hotel in State College. Newly installed state president Sharon Brown, Barb Andrus and Judy Warn are planning to attend.
Following the meeting the club shared delicious refreshments served by hostess Gail McMahon.
