CANTON — The Canton School Board met for an emergency meeting on Thursday, June 25.
The purpose of the meeting was to go over and approve the health and safety plan for the reopening of the school as well as the athletic safety plan for this coming fall.
Canton Area School District Superintendent Eric Briggs addressed one of the biggest questions that most have: mask wearing.
“We will be wearing masks in areas where we see we won’t be able to adhere to CDC guidelines, such as six feet social distancing. We know we can social distance in our classrooms.”
One of the purchases the school district is considering is hand sanitizer for each student that will have the Canton logo on it, which will be funded by a grant.
“We believe this plan keeps the health and safety of our students and staff at the forefront when they return to school this fall,” said Briggs.
Other daily sanitization procedures will be in place to make sure the schools are safe for the coming school year. The board will work on the details of this plan before opening in the fall.
“I would like to remind the board that this plan will be fluid,” said Briggs.
Briggs said through all of this there is one message he wants the Canton community to grasp. “We want to do everything we can to get school as close to normal as we can. We want our students back in our buildings.”
There was a motion to approve the phased reopening plan for the school and athletic department. Both were approved unanimously.
The next board meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13, in the high school cafeteria.
