To celebrate the coming of spring, the Friends of Mt. Pisgah State Park will be holding their Fifth Annual Sugar on Snow Event on March 14th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Our group is hoping that the sap will be running and snow will be covering the ground. The “Sugar on Snow Event” will be a hands-on-event. After heated beyond the syrup stage, the sap is poured onto fresh clean snow (in a bowl) and instantly becomes a chewy taffy, which is known as sugar on snow. Those who attend can help in tapping trees and the hauling and boiling of sap. |
Other events will be the churning of home-made ice cream, with “lots of kid power” needed to help with the cranking. This year we hope to again have maple syrup to pour over the ice cream.
Max Weed will be having horse-drawn wagon rides; there will be some sleds provided (or bring your own) for sledding down the big hill; dog sled races (pulled by humans); snowshoes will be on hand for youngsters that want to try the ancient way of traveling on top of the snow; the Moyer Sisters will have hot dogs and s’mores to roast over hot coals, of a wood fire and geo-caching, with ten way-points put out for those who would like to try this outdoor sport (gps’s will be available).
In the warmth of the nature center, Nelson Waffle will be on hand to entertain you with his banjo and guitar music; Ron Young will be on hand to identify birds found in the park.
So, bundle up and bring your family to Mt. Pisgah State Park on March 14th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and join us at The Friends’ fifth Annual Sugar on Snow Event, a historical treat. If there are any questions, contact the park office at 570 297-2734.
Some events depend on the weather.
