CANTON — The Summer Lunch program in Canton has begun this year.
The lunch program runs every Monday evening from 4:30-5:30 p.m. until Aug. 16. It will be a drive-through pickup. Each child will receive three bagged lunches a week.
Children 18 and under are eligible for the lunches and must reside in the Canton School District.
“A couple years ago, we were asked by the school district to provide a summer food program that would reach the students in the Canton school district,” said Jackie Harper.
“The Summer Lunch Program is important to the community because it provides a need, in this case food, to those students within the school district. I believe that it is also important to the community because it truly does connect the community with the youth.”
The location for pickup is on the corner of First and Montague Streets in Canton. It is the Impact Youth Building beside the tennis courts.
The pickup will include produce boxes every Monday until the middle of July.
Lighthouse Church and Canton community are partnering with Child Hunger Outreach Partners to help make this possible. The project is funded by the Canton community.
“Those that send monetary donations and that volunteer know they are investing in the lives and futures of local youth in their community. It is also important for everyone to see us working together. The school district, churches, businesses, and locals all come together under an important issue and that is feeding youth in our area. What makes our Summer Lunch Program unique is that it is not specifically needs based,” said Harper.
To send in a donation to this project, please send the check to Lighthouse at 141 E. Main Street, Canton, PA 17724. In the memo, write Summer Lunch Program.
