“Children, obey your parents in the Lord.” From the beginning God understood relationships. Being a Father, God recognizes the seemingly insurmountable challenge of raising children. It is why God created the order of authority: the father is the head of the family; the parents are to guide children in what is right. Parents are not perfect, just as children are not perfect. However, parents have had more experience at living and are able to protect a child from most harm. Kenny Boles in his study guide, “Thirteen Lessons on Ephesians,” wrote, “Children ultimately must make their own choices about how they will live.” Then, Boles wrote, “The job for parents, then, is not to make all the choices for their children, but to be teaching them to make the right choices for themselves.
The word, “obey” is a directive for listening carefully so you do what is being asked. It is listening and submitting to your parents’ authority. For those who do not obey, it can lead them to other areas of disobedience. Continuous disobedience will lead to lawlessness, irreligion and godlessness. It will become a sign of the evilness of the last days. This is what happened to the Israelites every time they started worshipping other gods. Basically, the rejection of authority will lead to the breakdown of society and the turning away from God.
Paul continues with “for this is right.” In describing this, D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones in his book, “Life in the Spirit in Marriage, Home and Work,” wrote, “It is righteous: it is something which is essentially right and good in and of itself.” As Gareth L. Reese puts it, “‘Right’ probably means that obeying one’s parents is something that God says is right; something that is ordained by God, one of God’s eternal principles.” When you consider all the things parents do to provide food and shelter for their children to keep them healthy, to keep them from hurting themselves, and protect them from the evils of the world often sacrificing their own health; it is right to obey your parents. It is a way of honoring your parents as God intended you to do. Most parents went a better life for their children, then they had.
THINK CAREFULLY IF YOU ARE SUBMITTING AS THE LORD INTENDED FOR YOU TO BE DOING!!!
