Jesus is also saying if you hold to His teachings you are one of His disciples. When you do an in-depth study of the phrase “if you hold” in the original language you will come to the understanding that this is a continuous holding to His teachings. It is not just learning the facts but it is putting them into practice in your daily life, remaining in Jesus. That is a continuous process. The way you hold to Jesus’ teachings will show if you are really His disciples. Jesus also said that you will know if they are my disciples by their fruits. So what kind of fruits are you producing?
The climax to what Jesus said in these verses is when you know the truth it will set you free. When you know the truth you will act on it. It comes down to what kind of relationship you have with Jesus. By making Jesus your Lord and Savior you not only have the freedom from sin but freedom from fear, freedom from worry and even the freedom from death. You will not fear death because if you die the physical death before Jesus returns you will still be with Him in heaven. Paul says it best, “For me to live is Christ, to die is gain,” Philippians 1:21. This is true freedom to be in Christ. Do you have the freedom that believing in Christ gives?
