Bradford County Conservation District received $2000 in grant money to conduct two different farm tours where farmer projects (BMP’s) will be highlighted, and a research trial on nitrogen needs of corn in various management schemes. The tours will focus on improvements local farms have installed that will benefit both them and the environment. The nitrogen trial will focus on applying less nitrogen on fields that can supply their own (cover crops, no-till, soil health).
“With this grant money, the district will have the opportunity to educate local residents on how they can make a difference in their own community,” said Kevin Brown, Ag Resource Specialist. “We look forward to getting started on this project that will help to ensure enough clean water for future generations.”
Education and outreach about the project(s) is expected to begin this fall with the first farm tour and results from a nitrogen study to be done on corn this year. The district expects to have the project work begin no later than June 1, 2015.
Thirty projects will be funded in 26 of the state’s counties. Projects include agricultural field days, rain barrel workshops, stormwater tours and more. For a complete listing of awarded projects, visit http://goo.gl/xw3RBm.
