Jim Lewis What’s in YOUR wallet? I bet you know the commercial. It’s a good one because we all remember it. The idea is to self-examine your credit card(s) and hopefully realize that you could owe less and do more with theirs. Is theirs better? I don’t know, but it’s important enough for most of us to at least consider, even if it only gets us to look at how much debt we ARE carrying. Debt causes stress and sometimes we may need to self-examine and, “get our house in order.” What’s in your wallet is probably not the only burden you carry. Perhaps it’s depression, unforgiveness of others or yourself, a broken relationship or…
Evangelist Eric Smith “She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.” 1st Peter 5:13-14. These are the final words Peter wrote in this letter. This letter was written from Rome; therefore the “She” is referring to the Church in Rome. Other letters and especially the Book of Revelation use the term “Babylon” for the city of Rome. There are other possibilities but Rome fits the situation best. This Church is sending their “greetings” to the Christians in Asia Minor to encourage them to remain faithful to Jesus Christ in the face of persecution.
Fr. Michael McCormick This weekend Catholics throughout the world are celebrating the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Catholics believe that the wine and bread offered at Mass become the actual Body and Blood of Christ. We base this belief on our reading of all 4 Gospels as well as Acts, I Corinthians and the Letter to the Hebrews.
By John Shaffer Several Republican Presidential candidates have found themselves in a bit of a jam by answering the hypothetical question, “If you knew then what you know now, would you have supported the Iraq War?” Even Jeb Bush, the brother of the President who led the Iraq War, stated that he would not. Now there is nothing wrong with opposing the war, or with changing one’s mind, but we can’t help but think that these candidates may have come to their hypothetical answer by sticking their finger into the wind and voting with public opinion, or perhaps finding out that Iraq is on the brink of collapse. But it wasn’t always – in 2011, President Obama and Vice-President Biden took credit for “ending the war” responsibly and said that Iraq could be the "administration’s biggest success.”
By William Bower In Shamokin, PA, on November 16, 1922, Joseph and Susan (Raker) Eadie became the parents of a baby girl, who was named Louise. Six years later another baby girl, Marian was born. By William Bower ![]() Sometimes I find it difficult to think of a topic to write about but then I’ll either see something in nature or Mary Alice will ask about a flower, tree or animal and my problem is solved. However, I sometimes receive letters and pictures from readers referring to something in nature that they have seen. By Richard & Joyce Pratt There has been summer weather this past week with high 80s and lots of humidity. There was also some much needed rain. That rain is sure helping the gardens and flower beds with plenty of blooms. Between all the flower beds, I counted at least 6 different colors on the Iris. Plus peonies, and pansies, and many more I don't even know what they are called.
By Esther Butcher I think we’re getting enough rain. My yard was really dry as we didn’t get any rain for a while, it kept going around us.
Esther Butcher with sister Gloria and Bill Johnson went to Bloomsburg to the court house last Wednesday and on to a reception at Bill and April Barnes new home. We are now legal grandparents of twins, Zachary and Danica. The Court room was full of family and friends. Everyone had a good time. By Lorelei Colton We finally got the entire garden in, and I can honestly say that it is one of the most beautiful vegetable gardens we’ve ever had. Since Ron’s dad “Pa” was alive, anyway. He was the “workhorse” in the garden – tilling, planting, weeding, de-bugging – you name it. He was great at it. And, Ron and I both agree that he would be proud of ours this year. We even have blossoms on the tomatoes and pepper plants, because they came from Lancaster County and seem to be quite a bit ahead of the varieties and plants around here right now.
By Lois Ribovich Ralston lost another longtime resident, Archie Vroman. Archie could be seen walking up and down Greens Hill, where he lived. Well, if you know that hill that wasn't an easy chore. He always took the time to stop and chat awhile. We will miss seeing him walking up and down the street. May he rest in peace. Sympathy goes out to Lavonna and all the kids.
By Statton "Lefty" Schaeffer My Favorite Commencement Address
It was a bright sunshiny day at the “brand new” Beaver Stadium on June 11th, 1960. My better half Helen and I were part of that year's graduating class. We were cocksure we would and could, solve all of the problems of the world. However, our commencement speaker was the President of the University, Dr. Eric Walker who proceeded to verbally “slap us upside the head” with words of wisdom that remain imprinted on my psyche to this day. Let me pass on Dr. Walker's insight and advice to members of the new graduating classes of 2015. “Ladies and gentlemen of the Class of 1960.” He stated with a slight hint of the British accent that remained in his speech pattern despite thirty plus years as a newly minted American. |
