Kenneth Francis “Ken” Harris, 89, of Mountain Lake, Burlington Township, PA passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. Ken was born at New Era, PA on April 4, 1928, the son of Frank McCullough Harris and Lorena Scrivens Harris. He was a graduate of Troy High School Class of 1949.
On April 8, 1950, he married the former Dorothy M. “Dot” Andrus at the Burlington United Methodist Parsonage. In early years, Ken was employed by Cox’s Tire Shop in Towanda and by Westinghouse Corp. in Elmira, NY. He owned and operated his dairy farm at Mountain Lake for many years and continued working on the farm until the time of his passing. Ken also served as a school bus driver for the Troy School District for a number of years. He was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church, Iona Grange, Bradford-Sullivan Pomona Grange, Pennsylvania State Grange, and was a 7th degree member of the National Grange. Ken was also a member of the Holstein USA Association for 47 years, Pennsylvania Holstein Association, Towanda Bowling Hall of Fame and the Troy Bowling Hall of Fame. He loved the outdoors, farming, bowling, playing cards and dancing. ![]() Marilyn Faith Calkins age 91, a very special lady of Troy, PA., passed away peacefully at Twin Oaks Personal Care Home on Wednesday, September 6, 2017. Marilyn was the daughter of the late Harrison and Julia Morse of Troy, PA. She graduated from Troy High School in 1943 and was married in 1944 to Tom Calkins, Jr., her high school sweetheart. Marilyn began her working career at Ben Franklin in Troy for 10 years. Later, she became the bookkeeper for Tom’s businesses – Calkins Motor Sales, Town & Country Estates, and Calkins Mobile Home Park. As one would say, “Behind every successful man is a good woman.” That woman was Marilyn. She was a member of East Troy Baptist Church, Troy Community Hospital Auxiliary, The Arbutus Rebekah Lodge of East Troy, Troy Grange #182, and the Troy Booster Club. Marilyn began the Booster Club restaurant at the Troy Fair and was head of it for 10 years, raising money for sports clubs at Troy High School. Another project dear to Marilyn’s heart was the Fresh Air Fund. For 15 years, she brought kids from NYC to PA to spend a vacation week or weeks with families “in the country.” Besides all of Marilyn’s outside interests, she was a very devoted mother and grandmother. She was busy trying to attend everyone’s activities. Marilyn gave unselfishly of her time and energies to her family, her friends, and anywhere help was needed. When asked about hobbies, she replied without hesitation, “Helping others!” – A worthy hobby indeed. ![]() Dorothy Bubacz, 94, life-time resident of Morris Run, passed away Thursday morning August 31, 2017, at Carleton Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Wellsboro. Born in Morris Run August 12, 1923, Dorothy was one of six children of the late Joseph Sr. and Agnes (Andrzejewski) Bubacz. She worked for many years at the former Remington Rand in Elmira until their closure and later at Corning Glass Works where she retired. Dorothy was a member of St. Mary of Czestochowa Catholic Parish in Blossburg. She enjoyed reading, sewing, tending to her flowers and houseplants, keeping up with current events and visiting with friends, relatives and neighbors. Dorothy’s family extends a very special thank you to the staff and caregivers at the Carleton Home and to Nurse Practitioner, Wendy Fetzer (palliative care) for the exceptional care given to her. She is survived by two sisters; Eleanor Augustine of Blossburg and Mary Stratton of the Green Home in Wellsboro, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers; Joseph Bubacz Jr. in 1931, Chester Bubacz in 1975 and Vincent Bubacz in 1985. The evening of Wednesday, August 30th, 2017, saw the passing of a young Canton woman who courageously fought a debilitating condition for many years. Jennifer Suzanne (Yellenic) Blowers went home to be with the Lord while at Geisinger Medical Center with her beloved family at her side. She was 36 years of age. Born December 10th, 1980 in Youngstown, Ohio, she was the daughter of John and Cindy (Chamberlain) Yellenic. Jenn was a graduate of Canton High School, where she had been active in band, jazz band, chorus, volleyball and cheerleading. Jenn had also been a member of the well-known teenage choral group, Stained Glass, and had performed with them up and down the Mid Atlantic region for several years. She also enjoyed bowling and was very talented at crocheting and knitting. Jenn was also a devoted wife and mother. She was married to Robert Blowers and was the mother of two boys and a girl. Jenn was known for her bubbly personality and friendly, outgoing demeanor. She could light up a room with her smile. Most importantly, she was a woman of unshakable faith. Regardless of dire circumstances, she was at peace with it all. She trusted in Jesus, and Wednesday evening when Jesus took her hand she gladly followed.
Joseph Richard (Rick) Storrs, El Cajon, CA passed away the afternoon of July 29, 2017 after a long battle with cancer.
Rick was bon on October 5, 1930, the son of LaRue and Jeanie Storrs of Canton. He is survived by his wife, Betty Marie Storrs, Belinda, Bruce and Brenda; stepsons, David Posladek and Gary Poslandek; cousins in the Canton area, Elaine Bassett Shedden, Shirley Storrs Rathbun, Phyllis Storrs Beck, Leon English, Jr, Charles Storrs, Willamsport, and Janet Williams Sholtz, Harrisburg. A military service to honor Rick was held August 17 at Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego, CA. ![]() Richard (Dick) LaRue Kingsley, 84, Springfield Township, Columbia Cross Roads passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, August 29. Born January 18, 1933 in East Smithfield, Dick was the son of the late Oscar Jerome “OJ” and Margaret Keeler Kingsley. In 1934, a devastating house fire claimed the life of his mother, upon which his father eventually relocated Dick and his three brothers to the Springfield Township farm in 1937. Dick started school in a one-room schoolhouse in the village of Springfield, and went on to become a graduate of the Troy High School class of 1950. After graduating from high school, Dick began his farming career which continued for 58 years. On June 18, 1953, he married his best friend Rosalie Noble, sharing 64 wonderful years together and blessed with four children. In the early 1960’s Dick and Rosalie established Springcroft Farm which they developed into a well-respected herd of Holstein cattle. The couple eventually formed a farming partnership with two sons Ronald and Roger. Building a quality herd became a passion for Dick, and his participation with the Holstein Friesian Association led to him being a recipient of the Progressive Breeders Award. ![]() Helen Dickerson, 97, long-time resident of Ellenton, PA (McNett Twp.) was called to her Heavenly reward, August 29, 2017 from Darway Elder Care in Estella. Helen Louise was born June 30, 1920 at Spring Hill near Wyalusing. She was a daughter of the late J. Edward and Flora M. (Lattimer) Hendershot. On June 1, 1946, Helen married Harold G. Dickerson in Elmira Heights. They were blessed with five children and shared over 45 years together before his passing on Oct. 20, 1991.Caring for family and home came first in Helen’s life. She was a member of the former First Baptist Church in Canton. Helen loved her pet cats and especially enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and crossword puzzles. Surviving are three children; Robert (Mary) Finney of Leesburg, FL, Nancy Frey, Sayre and Gary Dickerson, Canton; son-in-law, Anthony Migliaccio, Secane, PA; 15 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband Harold, she was predeceased by two daughters; Teresa “Terry” Rosbach in 2003 and Ann Marie Migliaccio in 2004, two grandchildren; Susan Plossl in 2002 and Anthony Migliaccio, III in 2006, also five siblings. Shirley A. Hawkins, 80, Troy Township, passed away on Aug. 29, 2017 at the Bradford County Manor. Shirley was born on March 2, 2017 in LeRoy Township, a daughter of the late Myton and Dorsi (Sage) Bellows.
She was married to William Hawkins Jr. and together they raised a family and worked the family farm. Shirley was an avid line dancer and loved to teach line dancing. She also loved to quilting, winning numerous blue ribbons, working the family farm and being with her family. Shirley worked for many years as a nurse's aide at the Bradford County Manor. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, William Hawkins Jr.; parents, Myrton and Doris (Sage) Bellows; and an infant son, William D. Cole Jr. She is survived by her children Billy Cole of Troy, PA, and Lovejoy Laue, also of Troy. At Shirley's request all services will be private at the convenience of the family. Caring assistance is provided by Cooley Tioga Point Cremation and Burial Options, Athens, Pennsylvania. On Tuesday, August 29th, 2017, Vivian Z. Fields, 97, passed away in Cardiff, California.
Vivian was born October 30, 1919 to Cecil and Walter "Skinny" Zellers, and was a lifelong resident of Canton and vicinity until moving to California to live with her daughter. Vivian loved crafts, gardening, nature and animals and had many, many pets throughout her life. She is survived by her daughter, Kay Earley, of Cardiff, California. |
