The Canton Farmers' Market wasn't quite as busy on August 15 as in the previous couple of weeks, but there were five vendors doing business.
John Carpenter had Piatt Road Honey; The Union Township Historical Society is planning their annual picnic at County Bridge Park on Monday, August 31st , at noon. Please bring a dish-to-pass. After lunch we plan to car pool to the old Fallbrook Cemetery which is located nearby and do some exploring.

Machmer and Emma Graham Machmer (and Paul himself), met on Sunday, August 9, at the family homestead to celebrate their fifth family reunion. It was a sunny, lovely day, with temperatures in the low 80s.
There were 38 family members present, and four guests. Nine of the eleven children of Paul and Emma were present. Paulie and Linda had the most family members attending, fourteen. Paul, the patriarch, was able to attend, and brought a guest from Twin Oaks with him, Barb Simcoe. President Kim Kendall welcomed everyone warmly. It was noted that Paul has a total of 94 blood descendants: 11 children, 31 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. A round of applause for Paul and also for Emma, dear, late mother and grandmother, and wife of Paul. Pictures were passed out of Paul's grandfather, Alfred Machmer, Paul's parents, Fred and Mabel Machmer, when they were young, and Paul and his brother, Harold, when they were young. The minutes of the last reunion were read and approved. It was decided to keep the same officers: President, Kim Machmer Kendal; Vice President, Betsy Machmer Smith; Secretary-Treasurer, Julie Machmer Parker. Heather Palmer, a 2011 Canton High School graduate, graduated from Albright College in Reading, on May 24, Summa Cum Laude. She is the daughter of Crist and Diane Palmer. During commencement ceremonies she was presented the Dept. of History Distinguished honor and the Ellery B. Hakell Memorial Award in Religious Studies. Miss Palmer is a member of the Theta Alpha Kappa Society; the Jacob Albright Scholars Program; and the Honors Program where she graduated with dual majors in Religious Studies and History. She is heading to Germany in August to teach English to high school students and then will return to the United States after a year to future her education seeking a master's degree. Southeast Missouri State University has announced its summer 2015 Dean's List.
Beverly Unruh of Roaring Branch, has been named to the list for academic achievement during the summer 2015 session. Students named to the list earned at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and completed at least six degree credit hours during the summer session. This week Marsha Lewis will speak about “Love and Marbles”. People talk about love as though it were something you could give, like an armful of flowers; and for some people it may be. The Towanda Universalist Unitarian Fellowship welcomes people of all races, age, gender orientation, sexual preference or previous religious convictions. Heather Palmer worked at the Bradford County Museum as tour guide. She left the job to travel to Germany and teach. At a going away party, she received a fun award of a "food tasting" degree. She received this award because she was always testing the food which others brought in during her three year tenure. On August 9th New Beginnings Godhab graduated Paul Ragan from our four month program. In attendance were over 30 friends and family. Paul is looking to get a job in auto mechanics and is staying at the Aftercare Center at New Beginnings.
The celebration was held at "The Godhab" with Pastor Sean Tymeson providing worship and Pastor Mark Burlingame preaching out of the 27th Psalm , Desire one thing only. Paul was presented a certificate of graduation and a cross necklace by the board of directors. God evidently is in the family restoration business. Six months earlier his brother Jason graduated from here. We wish both brothers the continued blessing of a drug and alcohol free life. Carl & Opal reside at 1105 Tallow Bottom Road, near Muncy, Pennsylvania. They are both retired, Opal as an administrator at the Allenwood Federal Prison Camp and Carl as a High School Principal in Williamsport, Pa. They are the proud parents of 8 children, grandparents of 14 grandchildren, and great-grandparents of 6 great-grandchildren. The Farmhands Bluegrass Quartet is coming to perform at a Concert on the Green in East Smithfield, PA on August 22, at 6 p.m. This award-winning bluegrass gospel band from Nashville, TN, will share their ministry at a concert on the green, weather permitting, in downtown East Smithfield, PA. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held in the Federated Church sanctuary. A love offering will be received to benefit the group.
The Farm Hands Bluegrass Quartet was recently awarded the 2015 Bluegrass Gospel Band and Entertainer of the Year awards. The Farm Hands are one of the most exciting and talented bands in bluegrass music. The group features 4 award winning singers, musicians and songwriters, including two long time veterans of Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. |
