Before the dish to share and hamburgs and hot dogs luncheon, President Tom House led those attending in the flag salute and praying the “Lord's Prayer” The Armenia Township board of supervisors held their August meeting at Covert Church Annex with Supervisors Chad Harwick, Steve Harris and Wayne Morgan. Secretary Mallory Babcock, Treasurer Gary Horning, EMC Ken Krise and an audience of four.
Under Public Comment, Dan Bastion requested that the Road Supervisors look at a drainage problem on his driveway. Mr. Harris took the action. The LeRoy Township board of supervisors held its August meeting with Chairman Mike Miosi, Supervisors Jason Krise and Ted Tomlinson, Road Foreman Butch May and Emergency Management Coordinator Ray Miller
The Minutes of the July 6, 2015 meeting were read and approved. The treasurers report was given with these balances: General Fund checking, $82,398.25; Impact account, $272,491.63; General Fund debit account, $1,099.01; Lilley Hill account (Dirt & gravel Road), $53,683.23; Jumbo CD, $201,651.13; State Fund PLGIT, $43,162.82. The Canton Fire Department Board of Directors held its August meeting with President Rich Bardo, Vice President Donna Shepard, Secretary Sherry Miller, Treasurer Jodie Bardo, Fire Chief J. Scott May, Deputy Chief George Jennings, Assistant Chief Ray Miller, Captain Carl Hartford, Trustee Jeremy Seeley and municipal representatives Mike Miosi, Ken Robertson, Gordy Matson, Dale Jackson and Mark McMurray.
The minutes of the June meeting were approved. Paid invoices of $18,551.12 were approved and the board voted to pay August invoices of $8,155.66. Bills include: $675.27 for a new tire for the tanker, including installation; $300 to Bucks County Community College for EVOC class; $6,213 to Gannon Associates for insurance premium; $5,763.45 to Campbell Supply for repairs to the air tank and the monitor system on the ladder truck and leaking fill valves on the tanker; $1,665 to Campbell Supply for repairing the foam unit on Engine 1; plus the usual monthly truck loan payments of $991.83 to C & N Bank for the ladder truck; $1,984.95 to C & N for the ladder truck; and $965.26 to the Commonwealth of PA for the 2% loan on the Engine 1. Class of 1948 Annual picnic will take place on Saturday August 22, at 12:30 p.m. at the LeRoy Community Building, LeRoy, PA. Bring a dish to share and your own table service. Shedden Reunion The descendants of James and Mabel Shedden, will hold there 8th annual reunion on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at the Leroy Community Bldg., with doors opening at 10:30 am, and lunch at noon. Meat and beverage will be supplied. Please bring your own tableware, a dish to pass, and a $5 item (per family) for the auction. Also any family photos to be donated to the album! No alcohol please! The Heritage Garden club held their August 2015 meeting on the 3rd at Mary Alice Bower’s beautiful home and gardens. The evening began with a tour of Mary Alice’s lovely gardens. Our club’s members’ attention was drawn quickly to one particular flower in full bloom! See the picture! This dazzling purple Iris is in full bloom in August when most are blooming in the spring.
Hostess Mary Alice presented an educational program on Milkweed Treasures. She provided dried milkweed seed pod shells, paint, glitter and glue in which everyone was instructed how to make decorative bird ornaments from seed pods. After the birds were made, President Barb Andrus called the business meeting to order with a pledge of allegiance to the flag. There were 8 members present. Minnequa Grange will have their regular monthly meeting at the hall on Tuesday August 25th at 6:30 pm. Please bring finger foods for refreshments.
The Canton Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) will be having a "Seek and Ye Shall Find" Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, September 19 from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
Teams (consisting of up to six family members, friends, neighbors, or individuals) are invited to join in the fun, informational, and rewarding experience of exploring the Borough of Canton. Everyone of all ages (anyone under 18 years of age is to have at least one adult on their team) is invited to attend (can walk or drive around town). Fastest does not win; the team with the most points, from the correct locations matched to the hints provided, are the winners. The entry fee is just $5.00 per tam (up to six people per team). Pre-registration is required. The Office of Continuing Education and Graduate Studies at Elmira College is offering two non-credit professional development programs beginning in September designed to assist working professionals in strengthening job skills and meeting education requirements.
