By Sarah Welliver The Elkhart Truth ![]() Edna “Kniff” Kniffin was 10,000 feet in the air at the point of no return. As the small plane flew her high above Michigan City Municipal Airport, the 90-year-old retired teacher and life-long adventurer was moments away from crossing one last thing off her bucket list — skydiving. “People were asking, ‘Are you sure you want to go?’” she recalled. “I’ve been on planes before. … What’s one more airplane?” Strapped behind Kniffin, tandem skydiving instructor Tom Newman reached forward and tapped the altimeter around her wrist. It was go time. The Ward Township Board of Supervisors held its July meeting with Chairman Ed Sheaffer and Supervisors Lloyd Ayres and James Tompkins, Secretary Elnor Blaney, and an audience of fourteen.
The first order of business was opening bids for the proposed cinder building. One bid was received, from Jennings Construction for $81,000. The building was proposed because the present cinder building has proven inadequate for the township's needs, as it is too small to house the cinder pile. Because of this the pile freezes, making extra work to thaw the cinders so they are suitable for spreading in the winter. For the last several months, as the building has been under consideration, several township residents have questioned the need for the building, noting that the township already has a cinder building, and that the money to be spent on the building would better be used to improve the roads.
![]() Cody created a daring and dynamic piece of art with expressive line and abstract shapes. Inspired by the works of Georgia O’ Keefee, Cody created a beautiful composition involving organic lines, shapes, and raw expression. He changed the color balances, and created disharmony to force the eye to see the image as something else. Cody’s art demonstrates a powerful approach and skill level enhanced by a creative mind. Cody’s art was created using watercolor paint and crayons.
Alba Borough Council held its’ regular borough council meeting Monday, July 13, 2015 at the First Christian Church of Alba’s basement. Borough Council discussed the preliminary estimate received for road resurfacing for Sister Street and Cemetery Street. Alba Mountain Road will be repaired or resurfaced in cooperation with Talisman USA who utilizes the road to service an existing Natural Gas Well Pad. Preliminary estimates with a project scope of grinding, reclaiming, building a strong road base, ditch maintenance, and tarring and chipping came in significantly higher than originally anticipated at a cost of approximately $26,000. Council members agreed to table the issue until more information about the quote can be obtained and if the higher than expected estimate will require the borough to formally put out bid requests.
All of us are confronted by the passing of time - not only the elderly. It is an issue that all of us face whether we like it or not. Yet, our culture is in massive denial that everyone ages and every life will end.
Our elderly now live in “retirement villages.” More cosmetics than ever are sold to “erase” the lines of aging. There are more products now available to “cover” gray hair that once stood for wisdom. We have surgery to remove the signs of aging that are becoming less expensive and more available. But it is all in vain. Time is the enemy of everyone and judgment awaits us all. |
