One person in particular, Alpheus Gifford, embraced the Latter Day Saint faith and had much influence in developing the church and induced several other families in Columbia Township and neighboring Rutland Township in Tioga County to convert, including the family of future leader Brigham Young, who after the death of Joseph Smith, would lead the great journey in history across the plains to Utah.

Become a fundraising animal at Animal Care Sanctuary’s (ACS) 5th Annual Mutt Strut Dog Walk, 5K, & Fun Fest! The Mutt Strut will be held on May 16, 2015 from 10 am to 3 pm at Riverfront Park in Sayre, PA.
The doggone fun day will include a 5K race/walk (with your dog if you wish!), a pledge dog walk, canine contests, food,& entertainment. The Canton Township Board of Supervisors held its April meeting with Chairman Gary Ferguson and Supervisors Jasper Smith and Mark McMurray, Secretary Elnor Blaney, Road Foreman Bob Petrowski, and Tax Collector Michelle Deeghan.
Tom Close of MC Insurance Associates was a visitor. He reviewed the township's insurance package, which will renew of May 17. He explained major aspects of the package and highlighted changes in coverages. This will cover auto, vehicle, property, public officials, workers compensation, and general liability. Total cost is $15,369, which is around $800 less than the previous year. The Mansfield University school colors are red and black, but beginning April 3, R.E.D. will be the color and the focus of the campus on Fridays. R.E.D. stands for “Remember Everyone Deployed.”
Fridays the campus community is urged to wear that color as a sign of support for U.S. troops. The movement was born of an idea from MU student and veteran Cecil Cooper and backed by the Student Government Association (SGA). Waiting, at best, is difficult. Giving up, however, can be disastrous.
We often hear the warning, “Don’t ever pray for patience. God may take you at your word and hide from you for a long, long time.” Whether or not we pray for patience, we often end up waiting on God for a long, long time. It is easy to convince ourselves that “I’ve waited long enough. It’s time for me to strike out on my own. God will eventually catch up with me.” Recently, a Widow's Tea was held at the home of Eloise Caseman, Shunk with eighteen present.
A delicious luncheon was served and each lady had a hat to wear for the tea party. Games were played and a lot of visiting was done. This was the first meeting of the newly organized club. They plan to have more this year. Lucy Baumunk and Shirley Wilson were hostesses and arranged this meeting. The Penn State Extension Master Gardeners invite the public to meet the Sovereign Queen, a variety of daylily, at their 10th Annual Endless Mountains Gardening Day, to be held on Saturday, April 18th at the Athens Presbyterian Church, 622 1/2 South Main Street, Athens.
The Leroy Township Board of Supervisors held its April meeting with Chairman Mike Miosi and Supervisors Jason Krise and Ted Tomlinson. Others present were Tax Collector Helen Petty and Ray Miller, Emergency Management Co-ordinator.
The minutes of the March meeting were approved and the Treasurer's report approved with these balances: General Fund, $67,232.20; Impact Fee, $187,282.83; Debit Account, $1,603.92; Jumbo CD, $201,102.27; 1-year CD, $11,638.87; PLGIT, State Fund, $77,107.03. The state fund includes the Liquid Fuels payment of $50,187.88 and the turnback fee for LeRoy Mountain Road of $14,160. The Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has established an annual $1,000 nursing scholarship that is awarded to a nursing student enrolled in the Northern Tier Career Center’s Practical Nursing Program in Towanda. This year, the Auxiliary is pleased to award two scholarships to deserving students.
Applicants for the scholarship must be a resident of Bradford or Sullivan County and must have completed one semester of the nursing program. Applicants must have a grade point average of 85% or higher and be paying cash or receiving loans for their nursing education in order to qualify. Additionally, applicants submit an essay on the reason for selecting practical nursing as their career choice. Albright College senior Heather Palmer, of Canton, Pa., has been named a Fulbright scholar.
Palmer, a history and religious studies major, was selected for the prestigious 2015-16 Fulbright U.S. Student Award to Germany. Palmer will spend nearly a year in Germany, as part of the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) program, teaching English to German students at pre-university levels. The Fulbright Program is America's flagship international educational exchange program. Palmer will serve as a cultural ambassador, helping to enhance mutual understanding between Americans and Germans. |
